getting a dog shouldnt be weighed out by advantages and disadvantages. its a huge responsibility and you need to take the time to train and care for your dog. it doesnt last only through puppyhood, but a life long thing. walks, feeding, training and care.
but i will say having the greatest companion in the world is a huge advantage.

Advantages - Unconditionally loving, loyal, great companionship, sweet, ADORABLE, gives you a reason to exercise (walking it), fun to play with. Also studies supposedly show that kids with dogs at home do better in school.
Disadvantages - Costly, have to pick up after them, spend time training them (could be advantage or disadvantage depending on how you look at it - on one hand you spend more time with puppy, on the other it can be hard work), vet bills
Good luck! Try to adopt a puppy from a shelter if you can and are willing - that would be a GREAT thing to do (and some of them come pre-trained!)

If you are not around to housebreak the dog (a pup can only hold urine for about 3 hours per month of life), you'll never get it housebroken---& the dog not housebroken by the age of 6 months may never be reliable, That, & they chew everything. I'd tak an adult dog over a pup any day. Cute wears off pretty quickly.
