This is called acanthosis nigricans. It happens mostly to overweight or obese individuals, and especially to dark-skinned ones.
Try this: It will burn and itch, but you'll be see the stuff that comes off your armpit if you scratch and then see under your fingernails when you're taking a shower.

mix about a tablespoon of baking soda with some lemon to get a paste. It should not be too watery. Apply to underarms and leave overnight. Do this about three nights in a row.
You should start to get results in a week. Your skin will turn a little tough and it will start to flake. You can then exfolliate the dead dark skin.

i know you want more info but the dermatologist would be the best solution since it would be safe to use any products under them or you could just try online solutions to dark armpits .A main reason for the darkness of armpits is deoderant and could also be connected to shaving as well.

Ask a dermitologist (skin doctor) for a recommendation of a specialist who does skin procedures. Or you could call a place that does tattoo removal if they can help you. But this stuff isn't cheap.

I had a friend who had this problem in high school. If you use deodorant, try switching to a different one.

Note: deodorants with aluminum zirconium may be linked to memory problems later in life.

The puma stone answer was a good start, follow that with a good lotion. It helps, but it may take a little while.
