Effexor has a history of workingin as little a a week in some folks, others have also been known to work quickly it just depends on your metabolism. But you sound a very anxious person to begin with, and an antidepressant won't likely help you with anxiety anyway. Suggest you talk to a psychaitrist about appropriate treatment modalities for your anxiety problem.

I do not believe that there is a magic drug or piu\ll you can use to combat depression immediately that isn't addictive. illegal, and bad for you in the long term. Some alternatives:
Workout: Try endorphins. Even if you go to the gym or walk for only 20 minutes, you'll feel better. 20 minutes is usually the minimum requirement for any effect to take place. Run on the elliptical or lift weights or try the machines, but give it a good 20-30 minutes. You should get a good bolt of endorphins to your system. Research has also suggested that excerise is MORE effective against depression than anti-depressent drugs.
However, I know that when you are depressed it's hard to even get out of bed, let alone excerise. So some other ideas or activities worth getting out of bed for:
Therapy: I don't think that anti-depressents work alone. If you don't go into therapy at the same time, you're going to continue to spin your wheels. If you don't have a therapist, seek out one. Look in the phonebook, or even ask some of your friends. Talk to any friends you have about your diagnosis and what sort of qualities you'd like in a therapist (honest, forth-right, laid-back, caring, etc). You might get a very good referral to the right person.
I'm aware that therapists can be expensive. If you don't have the financial ability to hire a therapist, consider going to AA, NA, OA, or, if you are lucky enough to have one in your area, DA. I lived in an area of California with a Depression Anonymous, and I used to go the meetings. They were wonderful, but I would go to any type of Anonymous meeting if I needed to be around people, or if I was feeling particularly depressioned and lonely.
I do not know why group therapy seems to be the best kind when it comes to working against food, drug, alcohol addiction and depression. (All of which are closely linked.) I just know it's proven effective.
Last resort: Chocolate. Lots of chocolate. You might gain some pounds over the next 30 days, but you can stop when the anti-depressants kick in and get your *** to the gym and work it off. Rather gain 3 pounds than be miserable.
So if all else fails - chocolate.

It does not take 30 days for an antidepressant to kick in. I have taken a few different types of antidepressants at different times and every single one of them started working with the very first pill. The medication reaches it's maximum effect after 4 to 6 weeks. The reason for that is because you start on a lower dosage and work up to a maximum dosage over those weeks. It's best to work up gradually to help avoid side effects. However, it does not take that long for the medication to start helping you.

Shawni - there is something you can do TODAY, RIGHT NOW to reduce or release your feelings of depression, that will make you feel better RIGHT NOW, WITHOUT taking any medication.
Please know, EMOTIONS (and depression) are ENERGIES IN MOTION in our bodies. Emotions are meant to be FULLY FELT and then released.
Every time you don't allow yourself or you aren't allowed to fully experience an emotion, to feel it, and to move through it, the energy of that emotion becomes stopped and blocked in your body. It remains blocked until you go back and re-experience that emotion. Then the energetic block is freed and cleared. Virtually all of our physical ailments come from energetic blocks in our bodies, energetic patterns that are connected to our emotional patterns
One easy way to release blocked emotions is by using EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) or Emotional Tapping. In EFT you apply gentle acupressure tapping to specific body points to release blocked emotions. EFT is easy to learn (you can learn the basics in 15-30 minutes). You can use EFT anytime, anywhere for any emotional or physical issue. One basic round of EFT takes about one minute to complete. EFT works quickly and painlessly.
Please download the FREE EFT Instructional manual from the EFT website (www.emofree.com). Also, please watch the FREE Introductory video. Check out the section on "Anxiety/Depression" under the "What is EFT" button.
There is another EFT website, Tapping.com, which offers 14 FREE EFT Instructional videos (5-10 minutes each), including one on Depression. Watch that FREE video right now and you can learn EFT while you help yourself feel better RIGHT NOW.
I learned EFT last year and now use it everyday for everything. EFT really works, If you use EFT for a couple of minutes every day, you will find your depression easing.

What you might be experiencing in this CURRENT situation is you've made yourself believe the pills will work 100% before you take them.
That put aside, go to a healthstore or grocery store and find some chamomille tea. All natural. It has anti-depressant qualities and relaxing/soothing qualities as well.

The only person to give medication advice is a doctor.
It takes 30 days to reach full effect. Many people report feeling symptoms lessen right away.
Talk with your doctor or therapist if you are feeling suicidal and they may be able to give you advice on ways to get through the gap.

My doctor gave me this medicine for bipolar disorder to use for two weeks until my antidepressant started working. I don't remember the name of it, but right away - within minutes - I felt a feeling of calmness come over me.

I would go and get into a group based workout schedule. There was an article a few weeks ago that says that group based workouts perform pretty well against depression. I would not expect overnight results though. The link that I saved for that article is no longer good though.

Anti-anxiety pills can start to work 30 minutes to a day after you take them. Lexapro is an anti-depressant that can start to work in about half the time that other anti-depressants take. Sleeping pills can help if you are having trouble sleeping. Never underestimate sleep.

Sweetie, call your doctor's office and talk to a nurse. Ask if you can get something now like Valium or Xanax because you are in dire straits. Good luck.
