You may not find anything in the Journal of Pediatrics but you will find thousands and thousands of articles from humane societies and veterinarians that say babies and cats can co-exist. My vet has several pets and she treated my cats all through her pregnancy. And once they were born, they continued to live in her house without any problems.
The only danger cats pose to babies is if a pregnant woman has never been exposed to toxoplasmosis and is exposed during pregnancy, it can cause birth defects in babies. Most people, male or female, have been exposed and are symptom free. There is no longer a danger once the baby is born. That's why pregnant women are told not to clean the litter box if they don't have to. But even if they do have to, it's no big deal. Wear gloves, where a face mask, wash well after cleaning the box. That's it. Pretty simple.

Considering how many homes are full of animals and kids, why is this even a question with him?
Exposure to dogs and cats at the baby/toddler stage helps keep them from allergies and asthma as they get older. THAT is a scientific fact.
All you need to do is make sure the cat stays out of the crib till the baby is old enough to push the cat off of it, if the cat lays against the face or neck area. Cats like to sleep by warm things, and like the smell of milk, but if they roll against the baby they may shut off the area around the nose, so keep the cat out of the baby's room when the baby is alone. But other than that, there's no problems.

Why on earth couldn't they? We have a 2 year old and they were fine when my son was a baby. Many many other people have cats and babies. What is your husband worried about? There are many old wives tales but they are false.

Sure they can, why would they not be able to. try googling it, but I know firsthand that they can co-exist and if he is afraid they sell things to keep cats out of the playpens and cribs so look into that. It looks like a mosquito net but isnt.
