Recently i got into an argument with a friend over pot. I completely denounce the entire idea of it, and it makes me sick. He, however, said that i have no right to denounce it if i have never done it myself. I said that while I personally might not have done it, I've seen others who have....and he replied by saying that i have no idea...

Making a long story short, we ended up screaming at each other in the middle of the high school hallway and (in a very cliche manner) walking away in opposite directions.

I just wanted to know what other people thought on the subject.

I denounce kicking puppies, and I don't need to do it to know it's wrong.

Your friend's making a fallacious argument...it sounds like it should be right but when you think about it, it doesn't hold water. You don't need to have smoked pot to say you don't like it or what it does to you/to others. Unfortunately, I've heard this argument from potheads over and over and over and over again throughout my life...it's sad, how they struggle so much to justify their poor choices.

Sounds like your friend has a very weak character if they feel like they have to try everything that's out there before deciding whether or not they like it or it's a good idea.

You don't have to stick your hand in a fire to know that it will burn. Life is too short so to save some time learn from other peoples mistakes. Its not like we are talking about an ice cream flavor this is a drug so you have every right to denounce it knowing the harm and damage that it could do to your body and state of mind.

You don't need to commit murder to know that it is wrong...the same way you don't need to try pot to know it is bad for you. There are enough people who have researched the effects of drugs on a persons body, without you needing to.

Get some information of the net to support your theory. And don't let someone tell you that you need real first hand experience of something to have an opinion about it.

you can learn from other peoples experiences with things and judge on that. Because let's face it i could say jumping off a cliff is a delightfully hobby however i wouldn't think you'd want jump off of one to find that out.

however when denouncing something that can't harm you let's say a book, you should try reading it first then you may say negative or positive things about it.

Morals have nothing to do with it but having a preference is your choice. You don't have to try drugs to find out why you wouldn't do them. Your friend is a little nutty with that thought. You are just being a whole lot smarter.

His argument is just bad. So because you haven't murdered someone, you aren't allowed to comment on a murder case in the national press?! If you haven't ever got drunk, you aren't allowed to have an opinion about drunks?! There's free speech and he is talking Nazi ideology. Don't waste your time talking to him again because he's an airhead.

I don't think there's any person on this planet that can say they have personally experienced everything they're against. I think sometimes we forget that we own our experiences whatever they may be. Nobody can tell any of us how to experience anything. You and your friend , in my humble opinion, should agree to disagree....By the way, I and science, agree with you.

Do you have to murder someone before you know that its wrong to do it? Do you have to experience cancer to see the toll it takes on the patient and loved ones? Do you have to kill someone while drinking and driving before you see that its wrong? No, I don't think so. Some things (not all) are quite obvious and you don't need to experience them to see or understand the effects.

Ask him next time you see him if he's got to be in an auto accident to decide whether to cause one.

There's nothing wrong with denouncing something that is ILLEGAL.

By his logic, no one can denounce murder, unless they've tried it. Or LSD, or hallucinogenic mushrooms, or painkillers... you get my drift.
