Boys- use sport beads (football, baseball, hockey)
Girls - use flower, butterfly, or hair bow beads.

You could also use Alphabet beads ... hmm ... there are 54 in the circle + 5 = 59 ... 26 letters times 2 = 52 ... guess u'd have to repeate some of 'em ... or just spell Christ in the middle 5 decades ... ooo ... God between the cross & Mary.

Macrame -- Look for a knot that looks like a bead (I think it's 3 square knots, then you put the 2 middle strings back up through the middle of the strings above the knots and sort of roll it into a bead and tie one more square knot at the bottom.

I've also seen Rosaries made from fishing knots but macrame is easier.

The nice thing about the macrame/knotted bead rosaries is that the kids can take them to church and drop them on the pews without making any noise!

I have also seen beads made out of wool felt that you can string with a darning needle and wool yarn, but those are expensive.

How about beads and hemp string. When I was a kid we made rosaries for catechism.

Or better yet, teach them to pray from the heart. This is all that is required of us and the whole point of the curtain in the sacred Temple being torn while He was on the cross. We have no intercessor but Christ. No senseless objects, man, or four walls can stand between us and our eternal Father. He came to us personally and died here to make sure of that! And just what does God of Heaven say:

"...And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him." (Matthew 6:6-8 NIV)

"You may ask me for anything in MY NAME, and I will do it." John 14:14.

The best way is to use strong cotton cord and those big child's wooden play beads.
