Go see the recruiter with a plan.
If you want to be a pilot, tank driver, etc. stipulate such in your contract with a provision to release you from the army contract if they are unable to place you in that role (or if you fail to qualify in that role).
Otherwise, the recruiter will (lie) tell you that the army can put you in that position until you find out 6 weeks into basic training that there are no openings, and the contract automatically relegates you to infantry and you are stuck in the infantry for the remainder of your army contract.

Recruiter obviously. They'll need your SS card, birth cert, HS diploma/any college transcripts. You'll fill out some paperwork, hear a sales pitch, talk jobs a bit, then decide if you want to proceed. First step is an ASVAB test. Know what scores you need for the jobs you're interested in, and study up, there's lots of resources online for free, try military.com.
Then you'll do some more paperwork and complete a fairly thurough physical at MEPS. It's not that big a deal, but does get you used to waiting in line to wait in line. After that you'll be able to enlist. You sign a bunch more stuff, do a secutiry interview, and swear in. That's about it. You'll have a contract stating what your job will be and when/where you go to training. If you want any special schools like airborne or something, make sure you get it in your contract, you can always decline them later.

Go and call a recruiter, if you don't have a diploma or G.E.D. ask about doing the Delayed Entry Program, it will get you enlisted but you won't get shiped out until you complete your G.E.D. Meaning you have a chance to climb another rank before you join. (E1, E2),- pay grade and rank.
If you do have your diploma or G.E.D. already then ask when you can take the A.S.V.A.B. (Military enrt test) it helps to place you in jobs. I suggest you study.
Also look online at Military.com and get tips for being a super recruit you won't regret it!
Lat of all get ANY AND ALL PROMISES your recruiter makes sighned and dated!
Good luck, have any question you can ask me.

Summon the courage and go into the recruiter's office. Or give him a call and set up an appointment.
