I think it helps us to understand different cultures, makes us more tolerant of what we don't know and helps others understand us.
It's also vital for the economy, and whilst yes people make money out of it, people have employment, and people make money out of far worse things than tourism.

There's a famous quote from the author Mark Twain that sums up the answer to this:
