My dog has A LOT of fleas and I've tried everything. Any flea prevention you put on their back doesn't work for her. I've tried K9 Advantix, Advantage, Hartz, and everything else. The vet said it just doesn't work with some dogs; Just like some antibiotics don't work with people. I've had my house sprayed and the yard sprayed. She does like to dig. Are there any old wives tales or home remedies for getting rid of fleas. I've wasted a lot of money trying to get rid of them and they won't go away.

Thanks for all the replies. We are moving into a new house that doesn't have carpet and I'm hoping that helps. I will look in the dimond powder, thanks for the suggestion. Capstar is not for flea preventation it just kills the fleas within 3 hours but does nothing for long term.

If something is called an 'old wives tale', that is an indicator that it's just a silly story that doesn't work!!

There are plenty of home remedies and old wives tales for getting rid of fleas, and I'm sure people on here are going to tell you some, but none of them work. That's the reason proper flea treatments had to be developed.

Simply using one spot-on like Advantage isn't going to work - the dog will be protected, but if your house has not been sprayed, you're still going to see fleas. 95% of a flea population lives in the environment, so get a proper spray - by this I mean Indorex, Staykil, Acclaim, Skoosh - I don't know what exterminators use, but it seems a lot of people have not had luck with them as far as fleas are concerned. They seem to be good for other insects, but not know much about fleas!

It's not dogs that might be immune to some of the spot-ons, it's the fleas. It's a lot less common that people think though! Often if the veterinary spot-ons don't appear to be working it's either a) the house needs treating or b) people haven't put the stuff on properly - it needs to ALL go on the skin of the animal, none on the fur.

The real way to waste money is to buy things from pet stores (stay FAR away from Hartz: The Evil Brand), or to try washing in Dawn or whatever else people on here might suggest.

You should try Diatom Powder, or diatomaceous earth, it's made of micro-skeletons of dead diatoms, and it basically cuts through the outer layer of the flea killing it! It's completely natural, no chemicals...it's just a powder. There are a few precautions, like you shouldn't inhale huge amounts of it, but that's with anything really. You can get it at your local pet store, they have it in the fish section, it's used for filters, or you can go to your local nursery, they use it for African Violets. And this is just an afterthought, if you plan on using it on you home, like, in your carpet, and on your furniture and such, do spend the extra money and get food grade.

have you called an exterminator to take care of the fleas in your home? and also, you can take you dog to the vet and they can do a special treatment. once you treat your house (if it is the strong kind that you seriously need to use!) then you will have to stay somewhere else for a few days. and before you and your dog go back to your own house, make sure he has been to the vet and for sure killed all the fleas, otherwise it does not matter what you do, they will keep coming back. also, if your dog is outside a lot, spray him with Frontline (in the spray bottle) that is what we use at the animal hospital i work at and you can literally see the fleas coming out of the fur and falling on the floor when we spray them.

Your home has the fleas. Fleas will not live on your dog, once they bite him they die. You need to de-flea your home. And there is not real successful natural way to do it. Call your vet, they should sell an aerosol which you need to spray on your carpet and furniture, then again in about 2 weeks. Continue to use Advantix. Advantix works, get a new vet, and bomb your house again.

OMG do NOT NOT NOT give your dog garlic, it can kill him. Please do not listen to answerer number one. I have heard of a product, a powder called Diatomaceous Earth. You can get it from natural pet websites. Its something you apply to your dog that literally shreds the fleas and they die. Try that. Also Eucalyptus oil around the bedding on cotton balls, and if your dog is older a bath in dish soap as well.
