A born again Christian is a Christian who is saved. Not someone who is Christian because he lives in a Christian family, attends a Christian church, or believes in Christianity intellectually but not spiritually.

Jesus told Nicodemus that a man is born of the flesh and of the spirit. In other words, we have a natural birth and a spiritual birth. A born again Christian has had that spiritual birth and is a new creation spiritually.

There are many misconceptions about being born again as you can see from these answers. First you must believe and have faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Second, you must truly repent of your sins. Third, you must be baptized as Jesus was, by full immersion in the water for the remission of your sins. This full immersion represents death or the grave, where you are buried and come straight way up out of the water, born again, renewed and free of sin in the bosom of Christ. Then fourth you are given the gift of the Holy Ghost through the laying on of hands by those who have been commissioned by God to do this. After having been born again of the water and having received the Holy Ghost, It is up to you, being guided by the spirit, to live your life as righteously as possible. After you die, you will be judged by your works and if found worthy, you will, be saved to live with Father in His Kingdom for eternity.

John 3:3-6 Jesus replied to him, "Truly, truly I tell you, unless a person is born from above he cannot see the kingdom of God." (4) Nicodemus said to him, "How can a person be born when he is old? He can't go back into his mother's womb a second time and be born, can he?" (5) Jesus answered, "Truly, truly I tell you, unless a person is born of water and Spirit he cannot enter the kingdom of God. (6) What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit.

I refer you to John 3. Read what Jesus says to Nicodemus. You were born in the flesh through the union of your mother and father. You must be born again after the spirit if you are to see the Kingdom of God. "16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." There's a song I know based on this verse:

God could have chosen to never love again
Fallen man could go his way and die in his sin
But God, in His compassion, said,
"I'll pay redemption's price,"
And He took on the form of man and became a perfect sacrifice.

If riches could have paid the debt then God could have sold
All the walls of jasper, all the streets of purest gold.
But He knew the price for one lost soul
Was more than wealth could buy
And if redemption were ever bought
Then only love could satisfy.

A very powerful song, to be sure. Now, while God certainly did love the world so much that He did, indeed, send His son to die for all the sins of the world, if YOU were the ONLY sinner in all of history, the price would have been the same and He's still have paid it because He loves you that much. He gave His best for us at our worst. Amazing Grace indeed!!

John 3
3In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again."

4"How can a man be born when he is old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be born!"

5Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.

6Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[b] gives birth to spirit.

Basically it means that you give up the old flesh driven life and start again a new life that is dedicated to God and following Jesus and being a Christian. Repeatedly Jesus says that you can tell a person by their fruit (what they accomplish and do) and once a person becomes a born again Christian they want to only produce good fruit (repent of sins, do good, avoid evil, honour God, help the poor, serve the Church.. etc.)

or to REALLY simplify it. Someone that has accepted the saving grace (unearned forgiveness) of Jesus's death and resurrection and is trying to follow Jesus.

Todd

P.S. This is the way C.S. Lewis (atheist that turned Christian...ie. saved) puts it.

"Now is our chance to choose the right side. God is holding back to give us that chance. It won't last forever. We must take it or leave it."

Jesus told Nicodemus, "I say unto thee, except a man be born of water and of the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh and that which is born of the Spirit is Spirit". Being born of water is your mother gave birth from the water in which you were in before birth, and born of the Spirit is Accepting Jesus as your savior, and you receive the Holy Spirit that abides in you. You are then joint heir with Christ, and God is your Father.

We are all born with body and soul. When a person believes
that Jesus Christ is the God/Man,they are saved or born-again
and have the Holy Spirit. The term has been abused by TV
evangelist and such but Jesus used it when speaking to Nicodemus John 3:3. It's nothing weird or speaking in tongues
or weird stuff like that. Simply, believe that Jesus Christ is God.

Luke 12:32: “Have no fear, little flock, because your Father has approved of giving you the kingdom.”

Rev. 14:1-3: “I saw, and, look! the Lamb [Jesus Christ] standing upon the Mount Zion, and with him a hundred and forty-four thousand . . . who have been bought from the earth.” (See pages 166, 167, under the heading “Heaven.”)

Humans cannot go to heaven with bodies of flesh and blood

1 Cor. 15:50: “This I say, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit God’s kingdom, neither does corruption inherit incorruption.”

John 3:6: “What has been born from the flesh is flesh, and what has been born from the spirit is spirit.”

We become born again through Baptism:

(Joh 3:5 DRB) Jesus answered: Amen, amen, I say to thee, unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Ghost, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

Oldman,

Where is it written that Jesus was Baptized by immersion. there is no Biblical or patristic evidence of this methodology employed by St. John the Baptist. In the Bible not one person is recorded as having been baptized by immersion even though I agree with the symbolism that you mention.

Jesus said that if anyone is to follow Him, they are to be born-again. This naturally generated quite a few quirky looks. to be born-again means that someone, who was obviously first born of the flesh, dies to the flesh and is born of the Spirit. Not the spirit in the conventional sense, but the Spirit, as in the Holy Spirit. So whoever dies to their flesh, seeks Christ's presence within them and chooses to live in the Spirit, is born again.
