I attended a Russian Orthodox service recently and noticed there were only a handful of folding chairs. Most of the people stand. Why is that? Does it have significance spiritually?

Orthodox do not kneel on Sundays ti celebrate the Resurrection( frm Canons of the Council of Nicea)

Even in the West in the Middle Ages churches usually did noit have chairs or pews or kneelers(except in the cathedral or monastic choir sections) and people usually stood for most things even in secular life and were used to it.
On weekday Divine Liturgies or meditation or Lenten Presanctified Liturgiespeople in Russian Orthodox churches often prostrate so benches and even chairs get in the way
Crossing oneself and touching the floor(metany)are easier without chairs and pews.

I'm not Russian Orthodox, but I believe the idea is something along the lines that you are there to concentrate on God, not get comfortable and doze off or daydream; since its hard to do that while on your feet, I think that's the reason for the lack of seating -- to ensure that you are focused on God, and, as was stated above, to show him the proper respect.

I'm not positive, but that's what I heard.

would desire to be. Any great institutional church with land and money derives a number of its capacity from the state, and the state courts it to maintain the plenty satisfied. Too in many circumstances the church will supply up their concepts to maintain order and play the game for the sake of a civil society and the state's protection.

When a judge enters his courtroom, everyone stands.
