I did 2 years as a Drill Sgt. and extended for another year just because I enjoyed training civilians and making soldiers out of them. Well in reality, it is more like phase one. But yeah, when I get home, the wife and kids are lined up ready for in ranks inspection. Then I check out the kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms to insure everything is "dress right, dress". After I am through with those inspections, I go into the living room and yell and curse and belittle everyone within hearing range. Give everyone 20 push-ups, and then dismiss them all.
God I loved my life.
Okay, the truth is, we do have a normal life. Between cycles we take the kids to the park, or Six Flags over Georgia, go fishing, movies. Gee, every once in a while I even have sex with my wife!!!
Go figure.

They are normal. They do thier job and then they go home to thier family, just like anyone else.

Even at Basic Training, as you get toward the end of it, you will see your Drill Sergeants personality come though.

I have a friend I grew up with who became a drill sargeant. Since becomeing a drill sargeant he is always a drill sargeant. Like when he goes to taco bell "I WANT A NUMBER 6!!! BEEF DOG GONE BAJA!!!! WITH A HARD SHELL TACO AND A DOG GONE PEPSI AND I WANT IT DOG GONE 15 MINUTES AGO!!!!!" Then when people stare at him he'll say "Ho-Lee-Sheite ARU YOU EYE SCREWIN ME???? ARE!!! U!!!! EYE SCREWIN ME?????? needless to say he can never leave base again or have normal friends.... all drill sargeants either marry a female drill sargeant or retire to a military academy where they're accepted. Its a tough life... that they defend.
