Hybrid golf clubs are designed to be easier hit than your long irons (2, 3, 4, or 5 irons can be replaced with a hybrid). These hybrid clubs generally are lofted the same as the irons they replace, but have a lower center of gravity. This lower center gravity makes the ball fly higher than the iron they replace. The average golfer can not hit a long iron consistently, especially from the rough, and the hybrid gives them a much better chance to hit the green. A very good player will probably prefer an iron from the fairway, but the hybrid will be easier to hit from the rough. Some good players like to use these hybrid clubs for short chip shots near the fringe, just to get the ball on the green and then roll like a putt.

They are a new revolutionay technology, that combines the power of a fairway wood along with the accuracy of an iron. In most cases, the feature the same loft as traditional irons, but there low center of gravity and make it easy to shape shots. You can hit hybrids low and run the ball back to a deep flag, or hit it high and have it land softly.

Well, there are typically 2 types of hybrid. By the name hybrid are a combination of wood and iron by loft and appearance.

So they usually have the long iron loft to replace the long iron as long iron are typically harder to hit by some golfer and as for appearance the hybrid club looks like a smaller FW maybe a head size of the 9 wood.

As I have mentioned there are typically 2 types of hybrid:
1. FW look alike - this type looks like a fairway wood but having a head size of the 9 wood or 7 wood. The length are typically long and the loft is actually quite close to 7 and 9 wood from 17deg to 25deg. Higher number woods are dead in the golf world and has been replaced by the more catchy hybrid.

2. Driving iron look alike - in the past there are clubs known as driving iron. This type of hybrid has a not-so-large club head and they look more like a long iron like 1 or 2 iron with a fat sole. The sole is really broad to provide more forgiveness to the swing to assist the golfer in hitting more accurate shots. When compare the driving iron type hybrid with the wood type hybrid, you can see the drivinf iron type looks like a long iron and is sometime not providing so much confidence to the golfer visual but there are some golfer who prefer the iron look (I am one of them).

Hybrids look a bit like a fairway wood, with a very low profile like an iron. Usually the 3 and 4 are in the hybrid. Also in the irons themselves, there is a lot of weight in the bottom.

Hybrid golf clubs are clubs that are bigger in size and have the same degrees as irons but because of the lower center of gravity are much easier to hit and go straighter and higher and land softer

a cross between an iron and a fairway wood.

Additional mass and lower center of gravity give you the advantages of a fairway wood.
