You shouldnt do something you think is good just because you have promise of a reward.
That is being fake-good
which is worse than just being evil

I understand ur point, but think it is off a bit.
People spread the word because it is Jesus' command to us to do so. Doing so will not get u into heaven.
Seperately from that, I have heard many Christians say that going to heaven over hell, is a good reason for being a Christian, which I consider a lowly goal.
However, I strongly disagree w/ it being worse than evil. If you do good and act good, does it really matter why? If you behave in an appropriate manner, it is not evil to do so, just because others think ur reason for doing so is not the best.

After I accepted the Lord, I knew it was my "job" as a Christian to spread the word. Good works alone will not get U 2 Heaven! Only accepting the Lord as your Savior will. Some people may witness just to be fake and think they will get greater rewards in Heaven. If this is the case, God knows our hearts and he will deal with all of us accordingly!

Your take on the ethics of such motivation is correct. Doing something because you've been convinced that you will get some personal benefit is akin to earning a commission for making a sale. It's good for the business but doesn't indicate that you're a good person. "Spreading the word" with this kind of story is much like a pyramid scheme: it can involve lots of people but could essentially be a fraud.

There's no reason to have much respect for religions that coerce good behavior, let alone proselytize, by promises of reward in the afterlife. Better would be to foster good behavior for the intrinsic merit of living a good, ethical life in the world we know.

Truly heinous are "religions" that coerce bad behavior in this world by promises of reward in the afterlife. Does this remind you of things in the news since 9/11? or actually since the 7th century?

Spreading the word of God will not get you into Heaven. You only get to Heaven by being saved or born-again. All this means is that you believe that Jesus is the son of God and that He died on the cross so that we did not have to. You also need to believe that Jesus was risen on the 3rd day.

The rewards do come in Heaven for doing works but you cannot make it to Heaven by just doing works. Also, if you are doing works just for the "rewards" and not for the right reasons, you will not get the reward for it.

I don't spread the word to get "accepted into heaven", I'm already accepted. It has nothing to do with "spreading the word". I am accepted because I know I'm a sinner and that Christ died on the cross for my sins. By believing in Him I have gained the Kingdom of Heavean. It's because He did this awesome thing for me, that I WANT to share it with others. It's not a duty or a job, it's my life. Heaven wouldn't be much to look forward too, if I was alone there.

Nobody even alot of Catholics don't like religion being rammed down their throats - It is far better to lead by example.

I'm Roman Catholic and can't stand being preached at! I really don't know how I would of been if I hadn't been brought up Catholic. All I know is when I see someone in need I feel compassion, not a lust for getting a reward in heaven - guess you could say it's my conscience!

best wishes

Ain't it the truth! I agree with you. The good news is that is NOT the way salvation works. No one can possibly do enough good works to get into a place as infinitely grand as Heaven. A Saviour was sent to die on our behalf so that when we are judged by God our sins will be discarded and we will be welcomed home by the rest of God's family.

Our good deeds on this earth are to be done only to glorify God... and will never assure our own salavation.

"They will know us by our works" is a reference that we actually try to do good deeds to demonstrate to the world the miracle that God has done in our lives. That being said, because we are human it is next to impossible to do a truly good work because we do indeed get trapped in our own self-aggrandizing.

Don't get tied up in someone's "good deeds" when judging their authenticy as a member of God's people. Seek your own relationship with Jesus...I know that is what I am trying to do. See how he can work in your life.

ROCK ON!

i dont think that someone just spreads the word of god so that they can be accepted into heaven ........i think that they do it so that they can help people remember about God so that they can fear what's coming and adapt better ways ...and in the person adopting better wayz and getting rid of bad habits...the other person will also get the reward and therefore without them knowing they will be a little closer to heaven..

Spread the word of God is to spread good news and to encourage others to know him. To do God's will. There is nothing wrong at all to tell others about our Lord Jesus Our Saviour.
