Hollywood and reality are often at opposite ends of the spectrum, especially when it comes to firearms.

This does not work....at all and for many reasons. Pure Hollywood BS.

water bottle silencers like so many other things you see in hollywood look great and work miracles on the silver screen but are not so good in real life.

I had a science project in school (10th grade i think) to make a model of a muffler. (it would not have worked but never mind)

a rifle or handgun works basically the same as the piston of an engine. There is an explosion (pressure) and a release (bullet flies forward or valves open as the piston is pushed) and the gases move outward.

the plastic bottle would and does burst under the extreme pressure. A british 303, my weapon of choice, produces 18 tons of pressure in the breach when it fires.

I don't recall what weapon the shooter has, but his breech pressure is less than that, and it would still blow the bottle apart and be heard pretty well.

If you want a real silencer that works, go into the military and get a skill the clandestine types want and they will provide a working silence.

if you read the backyard gorilla books, they say any plastic bottle, (don't buy into it)

Strips of wool. People have also used wet newspaper, strips of t-shirt, and even hollow bottles. Notice they don't have to follow through with any of the real legal actions they would if this was capable of quieting a gunshot. In real life, this won't work at all for a good number of reasons. Also, this is illegal to do by U.S. federal law without a permit, background check, letter of approval from your chief law enforcement agent, and tax stamp from the BATF. By the time you do all that, you might as well buy a legal one under class 3 paperwork.

You can see how 'effective' this type of silencer is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAIWRTmN5yY&

It's an empty I liter water bottle stuffed with cotton "wicking" material. It's a 1 shot throw away homemade Silencer/Suppressor that is far from effective if attempted anywhere but Hollywood. It was usually taped onto the firearm barrel with duct tape or electrical tape.

You can tell the one in the picture you posted was a "Prop" because the Exit hole thru the bottom of the plastic bottle is already "cut out" for the fired bullet to exit...Something that would be impossible to guarantee that the bullet would come out thru the existing hole perfectly centered........

Those water bottles filled with paper or stuffed materials do not work, watch that video the one guy has on his post, they dont work at all...... if you want a real silencer search for a real one on the net.... building one out of a water bottle will give you the results seen in the video.

One of the things that does work so I have been told is to put a baby's nipple over the end of the barrel, but its only effective for one (1)* shot only.* I never tried it myself.* used only on 22 LR.*
