I'm assuming you don't believe the "once saved, always saved" theory, and I'm assuming again that it was maybe a baptist? I've had these conversations with Baptists...oh man.
No, the Bible actually states twice from what I can think off hand, that you can in fact backtrack and lose your salvation. If you live in sin, no matter how loving God is, He will not allow that sin in His kingdom. Just because you ask for forgiveness at the last minute on your deathbed doesn't mean your saved either, you got to live it. Paul said it:
Rom 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
Rom 6:2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
Rom 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
Rom 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Rom 6:5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
Rom 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
Rom 6:7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.
But here's the kicker:
Heb 6:4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
Heb 6:5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
Heb 6:6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.
Especially 6:6...ouch.

To save you a lot of trouble with deciphering whatever answers you may get through YA please purchase and read "Life in the Son" by Robert Shank. IT IS THE MOST THOROUGH AND DEFINITIVE BOOK ON THIS SUBJECT IN EXISTENCE AND BACKS EVERYTHING WITH VERY DILIGENT RESEARCH OF SCRIPTURE AND BOTH SIDES OF THE ISSUE. Old Guy 63 -- There are scriptures that can be used to prove once saved always saved as well as losing salvation. The two schools of thought are called Arminianism and Calvinism and if you study both you can see that each has it's own pet scriptures. However if you combine all the scriptures on this subject as the book above does it will leave you with answers that are irrefutable unless, of course, your are so biased in your thinking that you can't be taught.

Yes....BUT>>>>> If you are not a christian that produces fruit you will be thrown in to the fire. This would mean that you are not a true Christian.
Saying a prayer of salvation and then like a dog returning to his vomit, you go back to your old self means you aren't saved.
It's sad that the USA is preaching, "say a prayer to ask Jesus into your heart and be saved". This is not the only part of salvation. It is a fruit bearing process. BUT, do not confuse it with works.

no its not a scriptual teaching Lets see what Jesus said about it
(Matthew 24:13) 13 But he that has endured to the end is the one that will be saved.
(Revelation 2:5-7) 5 “‘Therefore remember from what you have fallen, and repent and do the former deeds. If you do not, I am coming to you, and I will remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent. 6 Still, you do have this, that you hate the deeds of the sect of Nic‧o‧la′us, which I also hate. 7 Let the one who has an ear hear what the spirit says to the congregations: To him that conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.’
(Revelation 2:8-9) 8 “And to the angel of the congregation in Smyr′na write: These are the things that he says, ‘the First and the Last,’ who became dead and came to life [again], 9 ‘I know your tribulation and poverty—but you are rich—and the blasphemy by those who say they themselves are Jews, and yet they are not but are a synagogue of Satan. . .
11 Let the one who has an ear hear what the spirit says to the congregations: He that conquers WILL BY NO MEANS BE HARMED BY THE SECOND DEATH
(Revelation 2:15-16) . . .So you, also, have those holding fast the teaching of the sect of Nic‧o‧la′us likewise. 16 Therefore repent. If you do not, I am coming to you quickly, and I will war with them with the long sword of my mouth.
(2 Corinthians 13:5-6) 5 Keep testing whether YOU are in the faith, keep proving what YOU yourselves are. Or do YOU not recognize that Jesus Christ is in union with YOU? Unless YOU are disapproved. 6 I truly hope YOU will come to know we are not disapproved.
see how Paul felt about already being saved
(1 Corinthians 9:27) . . .but I pummel my body and lead it as a slave, that, after I have preached to others, I myself should not become disapproved somehow.
(Philippians 3:13-14) . . .Brothers, I do not yet consider myself as having laid hold on [it]; but there is one thing about it: Forgetting the things behind and stretching forward to the things ahead, 14 I am pursuing down toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God by means of Christ Jesus. . .

I was brought up in a Christian home. But for a couple of years of my life, I chose to leave God, to leave a Christian life. I told God that I didn't want my salvation, and i "gave it back." When I came back to God, I realized I never lost it. But I did choose to disobey. I went back to the alter to get saved again, just in case. But shortly after, I was talking about the gifts God had given me, and wondered if I had to get them again. The answer rang true, the gifts of the spirit (1 Corinthians 12) had never left me.
I had a big conflict in my heart after I returned to God. I read the Bible alot, and other books to try and find something that would give me peace of mind. I stumbled upon this passage in Romans 11. It took me a while to understand it, but after I did, I had a greater peace of mind about my backsliding.
"It is as if some of the branches from an olive tree have been broken off. You non-Jewish people are like the branch of a wild olive tree that has been joined to that first tree. You now share the strength and life of the first tree, the Jews. So do not brag about those branches that were broken off. If you brag, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you. You will say, "Branches were broken off so that I could be joined to their tree." That is true. But those branches were broken off because they did not believe, and you continue to be part of the tree only because you believe. Do not be proud, but be afraid. If God did not let the natural branches of that tree stay, then he will not let you stay if you don't believe.
So you see that God is kind and also very strict. He punishes those who stop following him. But God is kind to you, if you continue following in his kindness. If you do not, you will be cut off from the tree. And if the Jews will believe in God again, he will accept them back. God is able to put them back where they were. It is not natural for a wild branch to be part of a good tree. And you who are not Jews are like a branch cut from a wild olive tree and joined to a good olive tree. But since those Jews are like a branch that grew from the good tree, surely they can be joined to their own tree again. I want you to understand this secret, brothers and sisters, so you will understand that you do not know everything: Part of Israel has been made stubborn, but that will change when many who are not Jews have come to God. And that is how all Israel will be saved. It is written in the Scriptures:
"The Savior will come from Jerusalem;
he will take away all evil from the family of Jacob.
And I will make this agreement with those people
when I take away their sins." Isaiah 59:20-21; 27:9
The Jews refuse to accept the Good News, so they are God's enemies. This has happened to help you who are not Jews. But the Jews are still God's chosen people, and he loves them very much because of the promises he made to their ancestors. God never changes his mind about the people he calls and the things he gives them. At one time you refused to obey God. But now you have received mercy, because those people refused to obey. And now the Jews refuse to obey, because God showed mercy to you. But this happened so that they also can receive mercy from him. God has given all people over to their stubborn ways so that he can show mercy to all." Romans 11:17-32 NCV

Nope. It's not verbatim in the Bible. It can be argued that it's implied, but like you said, it's not exaclty clear. I do believe that if you truly accept salvation, you are saved because to truly accept it, you admit to being a sinner and know you are saved from that sin. But, it's a matter of faith as far as I'm concerned.

No it is not in the Bible as such and is an example of how Protestant reformers have manipulated the scriptures to suit their ideology, another example is the term Rapture which is also a misnomer.

Hey Jelly Belly -- What about the part that states "No man can pluck me out of my Father's hand"
Or how about Romans 8:38 " neither life, not death, nor angel, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature shall be able to able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus"
THAT PRETTY MUCH SAYS IT ALL!

The Bible does not say anything about being saved, it only says that you must be born again which confused the heck out of the man who heard it and he wanted to know how as a grown man he could crawl back into his mother's womb. I believe in reincarnation and I believe this is what being born again means.
blessed be
