I had it bleached, it came up brown, but it all fell out after a few weeks. The bleach was too strong for weave hair

Is your weave human or synthetic? You really shouldn't try to dye synthetic hair.
If you have a human hair weave, you can change your hair to a lighter color with a dye that has a lifting agent (usually bleach) built into it. But it will still do the same amount of damage that bleaching it will do. You can't lighten your hair without using some kind of chemical lifter.

If you could give a little bit more information about the hair itself you may get a better answer. If the weave is made out of synthetic fibers you will not be able to dye it any other color, if the hair is a yaki type of weave you can purchase a box dye (from any department store) and use the guide on the back of the box to determine the color. You may need to go a few shades lighter to get a soft brown since the base color is black. If the hair is remi or 100% human hair (not a tayklon or yaki mix) you can use a box product or a lifter that doesn't contain bleach. Personally I suggest buying the hair in the color you would like to begin with, much less of a hassle ... Especially since most hair you buy in the stores won't exceed $30.00.

You can't make hair lighter without bleaching it, sorry. You never know though...your hair might be different then most people and it might work? Give it a try and see what happens!

Is it virgin human hair? If so, you can lighten it just using normal box dye (like the type from CVS) and don't need to bleach it. If it's not human hair or not virgin, then I do not think you can safely do it yourself w/o risking serious damage to it.

Jet black hair. I have truly dark brown hair and I believe dark hair looks better. I may really like blonde hair.
