No, he didn't. He died not long afterwards though, in 1903. He apparently tried to commit suicide shortly before the completion of the work, but failed. He died of a heart attack while in prison. He was pretty frail and in poor physical shape, what with the drinking and the syphilis.

He tried to. He had been hording arsenic which he was taking for the treatment of syphilis because after he finished "Where" he realized he wanted to end his life: he was old, a failure, and dying. So he went into the jungle and drank the poison. He took too much, vomited and went back to his hut.

He later died of either a heart attack, which he had already had a few of, or an over dose of morphine in 1903.

2) The painting was finished in 1898 he died 1903.
