Great question! I have had enlarged lymph nodes and inflammation for three years now. After going to numerous ENT's and doctor's I found myself getting worse to the point that its affecting my school habits and work. Rapid tests did not show positive results, and I was told I had viral pharyngitis by practically every doctor I saw. One ENT suggested I get my tonsils removed simply because they are red.
Do they know tonsils are in important part of your lymphatic system, and help to protect against more serious diseases such as pnuenomia, tuberculosis, etc? Tonsillectomy's should be the absolute last course of action in any case.
Regardless, I swear I have strep throat. I had it as a child. Their suggestions do not satisfy me. It still kills me to think that not one doctor suggested an antibiotic nor a throat culture (which is the next step in diagnosing strep throat).
And, yes you can still get strep throat without your tonsils. It is a bacterial infection that could easily spread throughout your mucous membranes. It survives in warm moist areas.

Yes. Strept throat is caused by a bacteria called Streptococcus pyogenes. The bacteria do not care whether you have tonsils or not, they just like the warm, moist conditions in your throat and that is what causes the disease.
