Do I need to pay the taxes immediately when I file, or do I send the payment to the IRS separately?

You can't e file your return after the 15th of October.

You don't ever have to pay when you file. You will be charged interest and potentially late fees, but you never "have" to pay when filing. Usually you get a voucher to pay the money owed.

Don't worry, if you owe money, the IRS will be sure to let you know about it.

It's too late to efile for 2006 tax year - you'll have to mail it in. Send your payment with your return. If you can't pay it all at once, pay what you can and they'll set up a payment plan for the rest (with interest, of course).

Your taxes were due on April 15. If you owe any, you will be charged penalties for late filing, and penalties for late payment. File as soon as possible - at least that will stop the late filing penalties from adding on any more. The IRS will bill you for whatever penalties and interest you owe.

Send a check for the tax. IRS will bill you in six to eight weeks for penalty and interest.
