I think it is easy to demonstrate that almost all religions are at their heart warlike or at best hostile. This is because they all promote in-group/out-group thinking - we are the chosen, all other religions are wrong sort of thing - which has been demonstrated psychologically to lead even very mild people to acts of atrocity. In one of the most famous experiments, unviersity students had to be pulled out of the test because they were harming each other.

In addition, most religions teach intolerance of non believers to one degree or another. In both Christianity and Islam this has meant the death penalty or oastracism for apostates or unbelievers. This is hardly peaceful.

I do not believe that all religions are peaceful because some followers embrace extremist practice and propagate violence in the name of their religion. The fault is that of some followers, not the religion itself.

I think all religions *teach* peace and tolerance but some followers misinterpret or ignore the teaching and appoint themselves as saviors of mankind embracing extremist strategies.

The ONLY 'religion' or belief that I know of that even remotely begins to promote peace is Buddhism. NOT Catholicism or Christianity, they promote hate, war, bigotry, racism and violence and ANYONE who says otherwise needs to do some history research.

I'm of the opinion that ideas do not hurt people.

People do - and use their ideas as rationalizations to commit their acts.

In effect, it passes off responsiblity for one's actions.

Heck, people are more than willing to blame the abstract concept - you know "Religion has corrupted their mind" or "Love the sinner, hate the sin" than addressing the matter of the person himself/herself.

Because that gets too personal. In the first matter, your letting your "opponent" of the hook and reinforcing your own ideas.

In the other - your passing judgment not on what the person beleives in - your passing judgment on the person himself/herself.

Yes, I do agree. Evil men will use any excuse or method to gain power and control. They have used religion, race, creed, colour, and socio economics for excuses for war.
