The nearest airport will be no use to you if it doesn't have flights to where you want to go! The nearest airport with a reasonable selection of destinations is arguably Stansted. Some cruise ships using Tilbury may offer a coach service to and from it.

Southend is the nearest, but that is mainly for charter flights and short-hop journeys into Europe.
The nearest "service" airport is London City.
