Because they think your job is "cushy". After all, they think all you do is answer a phone call from time to time and greet people all day. Big deal.
I've been a receptionist and I know it can be grueling work and people are largly unappreciative..

Because there are no boundaries for this job- you are cleaning lady as well as office manager and IT specialist. Also, I don't think people realize you have 15 assignments from the other people in the office, and think their work takes priority.
I think this happens in all jobs to some degree- I am in grad school, and some of my peers do nothing for group projects. So, either I get it done myself, or get a poor grade. This time, though, my partner is fantastic and a good worker. I just look forward to the times I get to work with such people and suck it up the rest of the time.

Good god they must be really stupid.
Mosts receptionists are the first to know what goes on in the office - whether you want to or not. (Staff usually chat with the receptionist about other co-workers).
You are the first contact new clients/customers have with the company and set the tone for the company, say hello first thing in the morning to staff and good night at the end.
Not all companies are the same as yours. We treated ours with kid gloves.
Perhaps its time to look for another company?

As a receptionist myself, I know exactly where you're coming from! We should start our very own support group, LOL!
For me, I think we get blamed for most stuff because others in the office think all we do is answer the phone and smile to customers/clients. What they fail to realize, though, is that those phones ring off the hook. And God forbid one of them isn't at their desk when someone calls for them!
Those clients think that since we're the first people that they talk to when they walk in that we're to blame for EVERYTHING (you know those times when they ask you in that snotty I've-got-better-things-to-do tone how much longer so-and-so's going to be? Yeah...). I've seriously considered writting a book on my experiences as a receptionist/switchboard operator just to shed some light on people to say "Hey, y'all need to be nicer to us!".
Our co-workers also don't know how many times a day we'd like to punch some of our clients in the face and how badly our cheeks hurt from all that smiling we have to do even when we're being cussed out.
Don't worry, honey. I feel your pain!

They think their jobs are more important than yours. They also think "anyone can answer a phone" which I happen to know is not true; there are lots of terrible receptionists out there. The best thing to do is try to be as cheerful as possible with the people on the other end of the phone; they will appreciate it (or should). And try to stay cheerful with the nasty people too, if you can. They won't appreciate it, but maybe your boss will notice your positive attitude.

Because they believe receptionists are at the bottom of the totem pole. I'd love to see my co-workers deal with the phone for about an hour when they make us receptionists so miserable!

Because everyone in the office is your customer. And you are likely the low man on the totem pole. Crap rolls downhill, after all. That being said, I personally am always extra nice to our Admin Assts. That little bit of extra kindness can go a long way when I have an emergency and need their help.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but in all the firms I have ever worked in the receptionist was the office ***** (and I mean the kind that everyone thinks is their personal slave, NOT some woman with a bad attitude and nasty demeanor). Unfair, but a sad fact of life.

because they are jealous of you ,,you are beautiful and talented..and they find you a threat ..because you work hard and it shows them up for the lazy people they are..it is always easy to find fault with anyone..so by doing this they think they will undermine your obvious good points..and thus relieving the threat as it makes them appear better than you .(only in their eyes)..others will notice that this is not the case..frank
