Even when you know the person asking, dear Moon, you can't always "get" the question, as it may be targeted at a particular event or someone or some few who are "in the knowledge" of the question or the joke.
Words can have many layers of meaning and that is what makes communicating with words alone, so very interesting.
Having answered your question seriously, I obviously didn't "get" the joke if there is one underlying it. What I did was, I made some assumptions based on the tone and the construct of the words you have used to ask this question and those assumptions lead me to understand that you are asking seriously, perhaps because you think that you have recently answered a question you "didn't get" and that experience prompted this question. Of course the process is intuitive or with empathy. But man.. describing the process is laborious! Sawry!
Yes, I would answer a question from a person that I do not know. How? Same process.

Well see , I didn't really "GET" this question...
But I will try.
Depending on the situation and who is asking, there are several ways to handle this.
If it's some one you know well and feel comfortable with, and are still confused just express it openly, or simply ask: "I don't understand your question."
If it is a stranger : Depending on the question you can choose to answer or not, it's OK to say I choose not to answer that question at this time.
And if it's a well thought out question, whether sarcastically asked or not , give it a well thought answer.
This will usually impress and shut down the sarcastic person, or make them think about your reply, even change their view on the situation.
Always do your research if it's a topic your not familiar with, and remember you can always state that you will get back to them with a reply.
Hope this helps!

I'm usually pretty good at finding jokes as I come here to entertain myself and have fun. Sometimes Q's are jokes amongst specific cliques, so I try not to touch those since I have nothing to do with them and they don't want my 2 cents. I go with the flow, a funny question will receive a funny answer and a serious question will receive a serious answer.

if i read a question that I know is a joke then i'll answer it with a smart @$$ comment. But i hate the ones that aren't in the form of a question b/c it's kinda hard to answer b/c u have to try and figure out what they were trying to ask

i usually see if a question is there to provoke, to make a statement, to be jocular or is an innocent and true one.
i tend to answer the 2 latter types. i'm wary of the first type and avoid uncessesary confrontation. ok i'm a coward, but sometimes, if someone throws u a glove doesnt mean you have to pick it up.

Depends usually if one understands the humour of the asker, however I have often blundered thinking the question was a joke and it was deadly serious.
a) Does this suggest that I have a mean and warped mind?
Or b) That I can't take anyone seriously?

I bought the missus a Guess watch & she showed it to Gaz's wife and said it was a Guess. Donna replied that she couldn't possibly guess what type of watch it was. I guess sometimes we struggle in determining if there is a question at all!
Take care Bella

well, if I think it's serious...I answer it in a serious manner. If it's just too stupid to be taken seriously, I respond with sarcasm usually. If it's a joke, I laugh.
