You need medical evidence to prove your claim. Self harm is not a mental impairment in itself. However, depression and anxiety are. Whoever is treating you for that will need to support your claim.
Social Security looks at it this way: They want to know how your disabilities affects you and limits you from working. They are not too interested in the "disability: but how it affects your overall functioning.
It is good that they are sending you to one of their doctors. Be honest with it, and go from there.
If you have been hospitalized get the documentation. any and all evidence will support your claim.
It can be a long and frustrating experience trying to get on SSI. But, do not give up! Keep going through the process, and do not start over if your claim gets denied.
If you finally do get the SSI , you will be paid all of the back pay, up until I believe one year.

The first time you apply for ssi you will be turned down maybe even the second time too I suggest you get a lawyer that specializes in ssi disability. The government will actually pay for your attorney. without one you don't stand much of a chance. What exactly are you claiming is your disability?being depressed and trying to kill yourself might get you into a mental hospital but that's NOT a disability. The process can take 6 month or longer.

Have you applied for SSI yet? Hon you really need to talk to the folks at the social security office.

Have you been under a doctor's care for your mental illness issues?

Social security has a team of doctors and nurses who meet and decide these cases, so you have to wait out the process.

I'm sorry for your issues. Perhaps check into your county's mental health department to see if you qualify for free treatment. Many times, there are grants available for people with no or low income.

take care of YOU. sometimes we have to do the work it takes to find resources for help.
