Atheism has been around for a very long time, before science as we know it..I am trying to remember the name of the Roman General that wrote a very poignant letter about not believing in the Gods..Maybe some one else can come up with it.. The point is life is better with science for everyone, not just atheists. I am a Christian and I love science.

It can since it is merely a lack of belief in something that doesn't exist but without well developed science it probably won't do too well since an atheist who doesn't know about evolution does not have a good explanation for the origin of life (and even though we don't know how the universe started we have good reasons to suspect that we will know in future and that it won't involve a god).
A nation that is good at science will also tend to be more tolerant of differing opinions and so less likely to burn the atheists at the stake making it a lot safer to be an atheist when science is around.

Just because people do not understand science or choose not to learn science does not mean that things will not continue to function according to the laws of science and physics.
Atheism is not science, it is an absence of religion.

Neither science nor atheism can exist without rational thought and the willingness to reject "received knowledge." But neither relies on the other for its existence.
Religion, on the other hand ...

technology isn't approximately proving or disproving gods. Its approximately accumulating data and evidence and deriving innovations which would be examined and confirmed for their veracity. on account that all gods finally seem to require faith its no longer a medical question. There are scientists who carry very own theistic ideals from a form of concept structures. To be good scientists they might desire to be waiting to cut up very own subjective interpretations from what's unquestionably confirmed via the evidence. to this point we do not have evidence for deities, some human beings nevertheless plug deities of distinctive varieties in for the answer to issues we gained't clarify or don't understand yet. some impose their notions of one on multiple random varieties they see yet that returned is subjective opinion this is merely what's being expressed in those costs. There does not seem to be any evidence in any of them.
