Was it out of need (nourishment), curiousity (a new hobby or to learn for fun), or necessity (like taking care of a family)?

Mine was out of need. My parents weren't there to cook for me anymore and I *had* to learn on my own or starve. Or if you don't want to learn to cook, why not?

I'm just curious I guess.

I'll say all three. We all have to eat. I got married when I was 18 to a marine stationed in Hawaii. We had no other family around, so I had to learn how to cook. My mom taught me a few of the dishes I make, like chicken and dumplings and biscuits and gravy. She taught me how to fry chicken and make the gravy from the drippings, too. I still make these recipes today. Over the years I've learned to experiment with new recipes and to this day, I am always making a new dish for a holiday meal. Tonight I'm making goulash, and though this is not a gourmet meal, I found a recipe that I tried and it wasn't quite right, so I tweaked it a little bit and now my family loves it. My son is now in culinary school, though he's taking patisserie and baking, so he'll make some great desserts, but will eat Banquet frozen dinners since he doesn't cook that much!

My mom taught me how to be a very good cook, I just wanted to learn how to make things on my own, homemade not store bought. I was baking homemade bread by the time I was 11 or 12. I have won many ribbons at fairs for my bread and a a few Grand Champions. I just enjoy doing it. Later on in life it became a necessity. I can make a good meal out of practically nothing and can really make a food dollar stretch these days.

My dad cooked a lot at our house and that got me interested in cooking. I learned more about cooking in my youth with scouting.

I was involved in sports a great deal until high school. Several of us went out for basketball and did not make the team. Frustrated, we decide to take up the hobby of camping (just about every weekend). Well, the camp needed a cook so I took up the position.

I went to college and had a roommate who was a cooking zero. So, I was the cook through college too. It followed me ever since.

Cooking started out for me as an interest, was further advanced by need, and continues today out of a love for the skill. There's nothing quite as satisfying as getting it just right!

I hated my mom's cooking (the flavors were okay, but she was a hurried cook being a busy mom where everything looked like slop) so rather than complain too much I decided to learn to cook so I can help out and have something that tasted good and looked good.

Also, I think I had a natural curiosity for cooking.

My mom worked two jobs, and when she was able to cook she was so exhausted that it never tasted good. So out of necessity I learned to cook .My brother and my sister also learned to cook. But I'm the one who will try new recipes and techniques. My sister only cooks very basic recipes and usually the same ones over and over. My brother lets his wife cook .

My Mom was a really bad cook. She believed food had to be well done to be eaten. I didn't know steak had taste until I had it medium rare at age 18. I started cooking and enjoyed the results I got with different foods. I probably have more cookbooks than most women have ever seen.

My mom was a single parent and I had lots of brothers and sisters. I guess it was out of necessity, but I really enjoy it and have gotten quite good at it, so now I cook for enjoyment.

I hate to say but, My mother could burn water... I mean it ! ! ! It was a matter of survival that the whole family learned to cook. I loved being a baker for a short time but the money wasn't that good. My wife and I still look for recipes in magazines and now on line. To me it's just plain fun.

I guess a combination of all 3. It started out as need/necessity, and has grown into a hobby

I used to go to nice restuarants a lot.
Then I had kids. Not only was there little time for going out, but I couldn't hardly afford it anymore either. So I decided to get better at cooking for myself.
It has really paid off- healthier, better tasting food (rather than ordering pizza every friday).
Tonight, pasta from scratch- semolina flour makes it soo much better...
