I have a friend named Tate. I've known him for years. Tate is 38 years old, and has undergone numerous medical procedures because of his excessive drinking (of which he is now clean and sober). He has had certain organs removed or altered, and has caused permanent nerve damage throughout his body, to the point that it took him six months of therapy to learn to walk again. He is also about to undergo a procedure that will forever alter the way he relieves himself.

All from drinking morning, noon, and night.

Yes, both my parents began smoking at a very young age. My dad at 8 and my mom at16.
Both died from lung related illness.
My dad died of emphysema. A 5 ft 7 in man, he weighed a total of 60 lbs at his death!

My mom died of lung cancer. Even though she had been a diabetic for over 20 years and had quit smoking 9 years before, a smoking related disease killed her.

I miss them ;-(

I hardly think there is a single one of us in this world who does not know someone with such problems. I think the real question should be, "Does knowing someone whom you would consider a cautionary tale have any effect on the choices you make in life?" I have a wonderful friend who's father was a big time drinker, smoker and drug user. He died at 46, my friend left fatherless at 23. You'd think that would have some influence on his life but it doesn't. He drinks and smokes and participates in extra curricular activities. Is he destined to end up like his father? Possibly. Really doesn't seem like he learned anything from him.

DEFINITELY my ex-husband. He started smoking at the age of 12 and was up to a pack per day by the time he was 15; he started drinking moderately at 11 and heavily at 19; he used drugs of all kinds, beginning at the age of 14 (no injectables, thank God).

Last year, at the age of 41, he had a 7-way heart bypass; he has uncontrolled diabetes; emphysema; you name it. Doctors tell him he only has about another year to live.

When I first met him, he looked almost exactly like Brandon Lee (my ex is Asian); now he looks like an Asian Fred Sanford. It's incredibly sad.

Most of my relatives. In fact, my brother looked at me once and said, "Gee, Leslie, you're just the white sheep of the family!" Both of my brothers died young from the effects of their choices, others died in jail and some others have had multiple marriage/divorces and other addictions. I got addicted to pain pills, but Jesus helped me get clean and stay that way for the last 4 1/2 years.

Look around, cautionary tales are a dime a dozen. Do you know any people who would make good role models?

Thankfully, I know some of those too. I may actually be one myself (although I don't think its good manners to nominate yourself for this)! :)

it fairly is definatly a cautionary tale interior the form of humor... Sorta a bitter pill wrapped up in a sugar coating to make it extra stable to swallow. it fairly is frighteningly genuine that we've risen so severe on the food chain that we at the instant are multiplying plenty ike rabbits that even the rabbits are scared!!!

Maybe this is only compounding the problem, but...

Why are there still monkeys again?

PS: And best wishes for Tate. May he make a speedy recovery and serve to help others avoid similar difficulties.

Wendy... she uses trans fats- I just know it. She wanted to be like ME, so I damned her to financial struggle and fingers in her chili.
