I'm a former Air Force guy and I must say that your cousin is a bit out there with his views. Any branch of the military that you serve in is honorable, but where you go you will have pride in that branch. I think your cousins pride in the Air Force is getting in the way of the truth.

Ok, my turn.
First I'll start with your cousin. Its quite apparent he's either sexually repressed because every gay airman turned him down or his boyfriend isnt sexy enough in an Air Force uniform. He's just pissed because his unit doesn't have any comradere and he himself is dropping the soap in the showers. As far as his attitude about the Air Force superiority compared to other branches, well he's right that they get an equal budget compared to the other branches yet crash more planes and the last thing to be built on an Air Force bas is the runaway; after the Officer's club, the E-club, his gay bar.
All right. I spent six years in the Navy as Corpsman (HM), five of those with the Marines. The Marines had that mutual love-hate relationship with the Navy: We loved to hate em. As far as my BORING naval careers, I traveled to both coasts (Charleston, SC & Camp Pendleton, CA), sailed to three countries while deploying to Iraq, hit the beaches with the Marines, and my unit served as the swivel point of the Southern approach of the OIF. This was just some of the boring life in the Navy.
Thrashings by Marines, ok, maybe a few jibes back and forth but no bar fights. That's what the Air Farce is for.
I think the biggest difference between the branches is Navy and Marine Corps hold onto their tradition.
Do not be clouded by your cousin ignorance. If you wanted an answer about the navy, ask the sailors.
Good Luck in the Navy,
Anchors Aweigh

Dont listen to him!! Thats not the truth, my fiancee is in the Navy.. People always say that people who join the Navy are gay or will come back gay, which isnt the truth, I dont even think they accepts gays in the military.. It makes me so mad when I hear people say those kind of things. If your cousin thinks that the Navy is boring and pointless and is filled with flaming homosexuals then I guess the Air Force, Army, Marines are too because there all basically the same, some are on a boat, land, on planes... It doesnt matter what branch of military service your in, your serving your country either way.. Do what you want to do, go with your dreams, dont let your stupid uneducated cousin ruin your life or dream.. Tell him he needs to research some more before he starts talking bad about the Navy, he has NO clue what hes talking about, i dont even know him and he pissed me off!!!!

Tell your cousin he is suffering from delusion. yea, you might get razzed by a marine sometimes, but not everyday. But at the same time you can give a marine some sheot too. yes you may go out to sea for 6 months at a time, but don't forget there is also all the ports you get to visit as well. at least in the navy, after your gone for so long, you get to come back home for well over a year to 18 months. in the Air force, if you get assigned somewhere, your away from home for the same year or 18 months. If your good at what your job is in the navy, you can get a shore billet, meaning you are assigned to a navy base, where you don't go on a ship. You get to go home every day. Also there are as many gays in the army, navy, air force, and marines so it don't matter. the females might be better looking in the air force than in the navy and army but I am not sure. The females in the marines are downright brutally nasty and butch.

Think about it seriously for a while. He's in the Air force, how would he know? Sounds like he's trying to steer you towards the Air Force. Seriously though, if the Navy were as he described it, why would anyone join? Having been in the Navy for 20 years, I can say that none of that happens. You do spend a lot of time at sea, it's part of the job, the work can be hard, and the hours can be long, but it's all part of the job.

Hmmmmm, ever wonder why the other branches often refer to the Air Force as the Chair Force? Because they spend all their time on their butts instead of actually doing something! ha! No disrespect to the "real" Airmen, but your cousin had better be ready to get as good as he gives. Oh, and before I forget...he's an idiot! I'll put my lil' nuke bubblehead up against his pea-brain any day! Gays, hazed, and thrashed?? Just goes to show how ignorant he is! As for the Marine vs. Sailor thing? It's sorta like the brother thing--I can pound on him, but don't you dare! Where our son is stationed, the Army, Air Force, and/or civilians don't start stuff with Sailors if there are Marines around. The Marines have ALWAYS stepped in on the side of the Sailors. And who's side do you think our son is going to take first? Oh, and ask your cousin who he thinks is going after that Air Force pilot when he goes in the drink? Yeah, Air Force flies over water too.
Truth is, all the branches have their purpose and do their jobs in their own ways. It's all good when they poke and jab and prod each other, but your cuz is way over the line. Not to mention plain wrong. They ALL serve honorably and don't get nearly enough respect.
Here's another side....Our son has swam with dolphins in the open ocean and had them tacked to his chest. He got an education in nuke propulsion and chemistry and lived under the ocean. He's stood proud at the USS Arizona and been pulled to the front of the line on New Year's Eve in Times Square. He got to stand on the shore of the Sea of Japan and say good-bye to a cousin we lost during WWII and to the friend we lost on the San Fran. He's eaten conch from the shell in Japan and slept on a barge in Guam. He's had an entire plane load of passengers stand and applaud his presence and he's cried with a WWII vet who didn't even know his name. He's learned that life is simple--you're either qualified or you're not and the galley at RTC really can make rice 47 different ways--none of them good. He loves to tell a real "no-shi77er" and no longer remembers what 8 hours of sleep feels like. Speaking of sleep, he's slept beside a torpedo and with water slugs singing him a lullaby. He has burns that match and a story for every new dent in his head. His boat is a pig, but don't you call her that. You haven't earned it. And just in case you were wondering, he may curse her very name from time to time, but don't ever doubt the fact he'd go down in a heartbeat to save her.
And then there's all those things you never tell mom....

I am wanting to go into the Navy and My brother is a Marine.
He says that the Marines do not get too chummy with the Sailors, but they are not at each others throats. Your cousin does not get to see the stuff the sailors see when they port. The pictures I have seen that were taken from my brothers battalion are incredible.
Do not listen to your cousin. I do not even know if my brother knows that I am looking to join the Navy because he is currently deployed, but when he does find out I know he will give me crap, but I know how to handle it.
Different people serve better in different branches. You make the choice in which you serve. Your cousin has already made his choice so there is no need in letting him make yours for you.

The homosexuals in the military, no matter what branch have a complete understanding of the consequences of being an "open" homosexual. Not only face a court martial, but get his a** kicked from any heterosexual he tried to get stupid with.
Now picture one going after a Marine, I don't know if he would survive the butt kicking that would take place.
Air Force is good duty, but if you want adventure the Navy is the place. Sounds to me your cousin is jealous of this fact.

I spent 5 years in the Army most of it was on a multi-branch base, and I also spent some time on an airbase in Germany. I would say without at doubt that in the long run that the living conditions are better in the Air Force not really sure about the opportunity for advancement. Like anything in life you only get out what you put in. Make sure that you check with alot of prior service guys about the MOS you want to go in though, recruiters are nothing more than salesman with numbers to meet too. Don't just blindly accept that they are telling you the truth. Good luck.

OK, here I go. I have three serving in the Navy at this time, my son in in active duty reserves after 12 years active duty for a total of 24 years,, in the civilian world he works for Cornell University in their IT dept., my daughter and her hubby have over 16 years respectfully and both work in the airwing, she can get a job with any airline as a mechanic if she were to chose to do so, and her hubby can go to work either for an airline or anywhere else that deals with people. So the schools they have do translate to the civilian world. As for gays you will find them anywhere you go no matter where you work....Could be your cousin is jealous because the Navy give their air crews Wings of Gold and the Air Force gets wing of lead.
