A small part of the training was accurate. D'onofrio's character, Private Joker, was not true to fact. In real training Joker would have been weeded out way before he could cause harm and injury. You see, there are more than one drill Instructor per platoon. If the Ermey character hadn't cut Joker out one of the other 4-5 DIs would have.
You have to also keep in mind that Stanley Kubrick, who is a Flaming Liberal, went after all military in the post Vietnam Era. Kubrick's work was considered out of step with the times and genre of movie making in the late 80's.

Like all Movies 65% - 70% fantasy and little truth.
Do people scream and shout at you in the real world - Yes.
DO people commit suicide under stress - Yes.
Was the Battle for Hue City real - Yes.
But remember this movies are made with one idea in mind to put paying backsides on movie theater seats and make money. If they really represented war in all its gory glory nobody would go and watch it.
A Few Facts about "Full Metal Jacket":
Few people know that the combat scenes in "Hue City" were actually filmed in the old Becton Sewerage Works in London England.
As the place was slated for demolition the film makers did not have to worry about doing any damage with the special effects.
The real palm trees were brought in set in "Rubbish Skips" and the container and tree buried in pre-dug holes.
The filming in London was far cheaper than doing it in the Philippines.

The training in the movie was very accurate. the difference is now over the years since the Vietnam war era, congress has made great strives forward to make sure rampant abuse of recruits is not going on. There are too many checks and balances in affect to prevent it, though occasionally a Drill Instructor may lose their focus and temper with a recruit. We are dealing with human beings, and training recruits can be very frustrating. Much more of the trainings if team focused. It is an indoctrination to one of the most elite organizations in the world, and if everyone could do it, then it wouldn't be much of an accomplishment would it? If you wanted something easy, join the Army..."So easy, even a caveman can do it"!

The gunny, played by R. Lee, was there to advise the director and when they didn't like the actor, he stepped in. He was a real drill sergeant.
The only thing I can say about the Army, I know for what was formerly called PLDC, they aren't allowed to curse at them. Now called WLC, it is the training for NCOs.

pretty freaking close, only thing is you only see the other D.I,'s once in the movie, thats not accurate. generally, your Senior D.I. is more like the dad and stays out of the punishment unless the platoon really f's up. otherwise, the "heavy" greenbelt does most of the thrashing.
