This page explains it well, some call it Hong couver, I think they chose vancouver because it's on the ocean and they like seafood and the access to the port. And thank goodness a lot of them use transit, lol. I got hit twice in a week driving around there.

The Asians you see in Vancouver are mostly Chinese. Though some families have been there a very long time, the major waves of immigration started in the 70s, when China was going through a Communist purge euphamistically known as the Cultural Revolution, and in the 80s, when Chinese from Hong Kong began to flee ahead of the handover from Britain to China. Canada was easier to immigrate to than the US, and, Vancouver is really a pretty nice place in terms of climate. If I had to live in Canada, it'd certainly be on my short list.
So, it's basically packed with Chinese who'd rather not be Communist, thank you, and would also rather not freeze thier butts off in mainland Canada.

Well if you were moving to another country you would pick a place where you could have a short flight back home for funerals weddings and holidays. Its a long ride from Toronto to the East. Then you would go somewhere that has a similar climate, and more immigrants like you to show you around. In my city there are a lot of Russian and Eastern European immigrants for this reason.
