my dad recently had something very valuable stolen from him (a truck) and the lady who took it is mentally ill. he got it back. we live in a very safe neighborhood, nothing ever gets stolen, everybody is happy, that was just a one time thing. it's just that, my dad wants to get a gun, and i would feel very uncomfortable at his house if he has one. what should i do??

he locks his truck. but he has sort of a bad backround and he was saying how if someone ever came on his property he would shoot them. you can't really tell when he's joking or not.

Tell him so. Suggest a restraining order instead of a gun.

I grew up with guns, so I don't see them as a problem.
In most states, you have to put money down on a gun, then wait for a background check to complete before the sale can go through.

If your dad has no gun training, he should consider that first.

If your dad really wishes to keep certain things safe...
He should consider reinforcing the door on his closet and installing a deadbolt lock to turn the closet into a safe of sorts.
Get Lo-Jack installed on each of his vehicles.

Stay away from the gun. It's his house and he has every right to protect his belongings as well as himself.
