I mean, we're sitting up here continuously sending more troops to the Iraq and Afganistan while the South Koreans are devising a plan to nuclearly ( I don't think that's a word) blow us away! What's up with that?

Conrange, that wasn't nice - (I meant North Korea, actually) - and sweetie, how about saving some of that spice for the battlefield, okay "deary"?

Okay....Here is an honest answer. We are worried about North Korea but any tense situation with the north must be met with any and all diplomatic means possible. North Korea has an immense army with its greatest strength in its artillery and rockets.....all pointed south. Any military action directed at the north would result in a devastating retaliation against the south. 10,229,262 people, or nearly one-fourth of South Korea's population, lives in Seoul which is within range of North Korea's artillery. The amount of civilian casualties would be unimaginable, likely in the hundreds of thousands.
Although it is a country about the size of Maine it places about 16th place in worldwide GNP. The economic repercussions of a new war in Korea would be felt around the world. These reasons alone are why we need to tread lightly when dealing with the North. Although North Korea would quickly lose in an all out war, the devastation that the south would face would by no means be worth ridding the world of such a crazy dictator.

First off..... Bombastic needs to get his statistics correct -

The Iraq Casualty list:
American Indian or Alaska Native - 1.05%
Asian - 1.47%
Black or African American 9.38%
Hispanic or Latino 10.92%
Multiple races, pending, or unknown 1.63%
Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander 1.08%
White 74.47%

This breakdown shows an almost identical comparitave to what the United States Racial Demographic is.

White: 74.7%
Black: 12%
Hispanic/Latin: 14%
Asian: 4.3%
Indian American: .08%
Native Hawaii or Pacific Islander: .01%
Other Race: 6%

Frankly, it looks like the Asians and American Indians are giving well more than their fair share.

It's not a race or competition to see what race is giving the most sacrafice... I think you can see by the numbers that it is pretty proportionate accross the board that all ethnics are in this together.

As for the question.....Its not South Korea. It is the North. One of the reasons we don't go after N. Korea is because of China and Russia. An attack there would be an almost certain commencement of WWIII.

Also... the US has no real interest in Korea with the exception that it is the border of communisim. There is No Oil to export from Korea - as there is in Iraq. Look how the contractors have made a killing in Iraq!

I really don't think we have anything to worry about with Korea. They fully understand that if they shoot first, the north will no longer exist.
------------------------------------
Bombastic - Point well taken - but we are not in any other country to preserve our freedom. Our Freedom was never in jepardy - it's the greed of corporate America on why our troops are where they are now.

I think the USA still has a long way to go with equality between the races and its just something that will happen over time, a long long time. Like the Al Qaeda , its going to take a long time before we get rid of the ones who are creating the havoc.

Koreans mostly are not racist at all towards white people. In fact, it's almost like reverse racism a lot of the times, they are really nice and helpful. They are racist towards a lot of other nationalities though, like Chinese and Indonesian and such. If you are mostly spending time in Seoul, no one will be surprised to see a white person, but sometimes on the subways and in more rural areas without so much tourism, the older folks will stare at you. Like stare you dead in the eyes, it's pretty awesome. But anyway, like I said, with white people, Koreans are generally very friendly and very helpful. And I would say it's safe at night, but then again I'm in the army, and I'm 6'5", so what feels safe to me might not feel safe to you. And as far as north / south, don't even worry about that crap. Just kids in need of a big babysitter. edit: I saw someone saying stuff about closed nightclubs. For the most part, the night clubs that don't let white people in are more like brothels than nightclubs. Those aren't the kinds of places you should go to enjoy Korea anyways. Every damn place in the world has nightclubs that are all the same.

Don't you worry your little head about South Korea deary, the U.S. have been based there for years, its those Northern Cousins, you have to watch, especially if the North Korean leader Kim Jong Il decides to order the entire population to convert to Muslim Fundamentalism overnight.

By the way you might just want to buy a good Atlas so you can get a fix on the rest of the world, just in case you want to post here again.

I don't know of the US having any problems with South Korea. The problem is with North Korea. I certainly wouldn't want the US to get into a war with North Korea? What do you want them to do, just keep invading every foreign country? Are you willing to get on the front line? Who's going to fight these wars? Frankly, I'm sick and tired of seeing all these young Black and Latina guys getting killed in Iraq and everywhere else and when they return to the states people treat them like crap. So what were they fighting to fix, and for whom?

Bob: I never quoted statistics. I was simply referring to the fact that in the US, there seems to be a resurgence of hate crimes based on race, along with an intolerance toward immigrants, including Latinas. My point is this: What is the sense in going to a foreign country to fight to instill freedom if you are still treated unfairly in the US? I'm not making this up. I am basing this on the dissatisfaction voiced by a lot of "minority" service people who were told that they were sent overseas to fight "the enemy" to instill something (justice) that they still can't find in America. They return to the US and walk down the streets and still get treated poorly because of race.

South Korea is going to nuke us? That is news to me. Maybe you meant to say North Korea. Most of what is going on is propaganda on the part of Kim Jong-il. Yes, North Korea has a nuclear program that is known and they are developing supposed nuclear weapons. Think about it though, would they actually use them? I really do not think that part of the world would be happy if that happened. China would not stand for something happening so close to them, and we all know Japan would not stand for it.

Trust me there are plenty of troops in South Korea right now who stand on alert. I have been there twice although it isn't media driven it will always be a great concern to the military.

We can't mess with the Koreans. They are too strong and fearless to go against. Even Bush isn't stupid enough to go against them. But this is America so I believe that somewhere in some little fort we are preparing for the inevitable.
