What they mean by recreate is that you do not have the entitlement to print the picture in a magazine or display it anywhere without the photographers permission. Popping a pice of work in a work book because you admire it is not copyright theft but copying the picture and putting it on your own website would be. If you have recreated that shot with different models, different area and you have taken the photo then it's your own work and no need to worry.(This would not apply if you took a direct photograph of the print out and then called it your own, if you see what I mean lol)
I am a wedding photographer and I often scan magazines looking for new, fresh ideas to incorporate into my wedding photos. If I was sued everytime I recreated a similar image I would be bankrupt many times over.
In future your best bet is to cut out from magazines as then it has already been printed.. But really dont worry! x

I think you are worried a bit too much.
There is a fair use doctrine in regards to copyright. This is why you are allowed to tape a show of the tv and watch it at a later date.
Now you are not allowed to tape the show and then show it at a gathering of friends where you are trying to raise money.

If there is no commercial gain then you should not be worried.

You can't use it, it's copyrighted material. You cannot recreate copyrighted material. That is the reason it is copyrighted. Explain that to you teacher.
