About two weeks ago he was limping and behind the pad it appeared to be raw but it looked better and he stopped limping. Yesterday I noticed he was favoring it again and its raw again and the pad is about 20% peeled off.

Your dog may have a splinter, or an object in-beaded in his paw. He is chewing and biting on it in an attempt to remove it. Look at the pad closely. See if there is an object that has penetrated the skin, remove it. Other than that, contact your vet.

This happens to one of my dobermans every year at this time of year. I thought she was just being obsessive or getting bored, but turns out it's due to a Goldenrod (weed) allergy.

Yes, she'd been to a vet about it. The only way we've been able to get it cleared up (when it flares up Sept-Oct) is to clean it at least twice a day with peroxide, and apply Tough Pads (it's typically used for hunting or field dogs) or a deep healing spray. Ointment won't work, comes off just as quick as they walk!

As your vet about possible allergies. Could be environmental and even dietary. Keeping it clean will help promote healing.

If you go to your local pet shop they should have a balm that you can rub on his pads that will relieve pain and also help heal them. It's very common for dogs to rough house too much and have their pads torn up because of it. Not anything to worry about I don't think :)

Of course you may want to take him to the vet. I had a lab who used to do that. He would get so involved in fetching the ball he would run until he couldn't run anymore. We started playing with a Frisbee, and it solved the problem b/c he could run "through" the Frisbee, making less hard stops. Hope this helps.

use some bag balm on it. at night put on a pair of baby socks or dog boots on the feet. tough pads is good also. if you are worried about using chemicals on the pads try crisco with the sox or boots

Why are you wasting time asking this question, go to the vet?
