For example:- Tom makes promise on Jack and Tom breaks it one day, does it mean Jack is dead for Tom?
Is it a sin if anyone breaks the promise?
Is there any way to cancel the given promise?
Pls explain it to me in brief.

Quran perspective ,
- Jack is not dead for Tom , But Tom should feel sorry and should ask for apology from his friend , as breaking promise is a big social evil ,
- Yes , it is one of the biggest sins , our prophet told us as "if you see a Muslim breaking his promises , then his Islam is gone ,
Quran says as "Hold your promises strong as you will be asked about them",
- Is there any way to cancel ?
Yes , if the promise is a sort of agreement among 2 or more groups or individuals , yes you may announce its cancellation , only if you have clear evidences that other group had betrayed the agreement , otherwise you'll have to obey it until its validity ,
Now if the promise is between a person and God , yes breaking it is a big sin , But Allah forgives to those who repent ,

Sin in my understanding is based on the laws of the Almighty that are given to a nation when that nation has the freedom to disobey the instructions of the Almighty.
Thus two things have to exist for a sin to take place. ONE: There has to be a Command, that you accept as from the Almighty. TWO: There has to be the freedom to not obey.
If either one of the two conditions are missing, sin can not be committed. Sins can be forgiven by the Holy One, except some may have to be forgiven by the victim of the sin in our belief system.
If one breaks a promise, one is committing the sin of short changing someone of what was promised to someone, as long as the promise was not forced or through black mail. In which case, such promises are of no value.
If the promise was made for genuine reasons and a person breaks the promise, than that person is liable to the level of loss caused to the one the promise was made. I hope this makes sense. If the Lord Almighty had not instructed us to be fair and truthful, it would not be a sin to break a promise.
But, as he has told us to be fair, it becomes a sin when we disobey the one who is feeding us food and allowing us to drink his water, and walk on his Earth, and breathe his free air. Once we are thoroughly indebted to Him, then and only then he asks us to follow some of his Commands, which in the final analysis help us, rather than help Him, as He almighty is above all need.
Sin can range from a mere white lie to murder. Thus the weigh to of each sin is different. When someone murders a person, they have not only killed that person but all people in that person's lineage who may have been born. In contrast if I short changed you of some currency, it can always be repaid, if necessary several times the stolen amount, which would fulfill the laws of Justice and it would not be a sin any more.
Some sins such as murder can not be washed off that easily. Depending on the consequences of breaking a promise, the sin may be small or big. If I told you I will come at a certain time to go see a movie and told you if I do not come by a certain time, you should go alone. Then if I do not show up, then I have take some of your time, but you still go see the show. If I made a promise to you that I will return back the one million I borrowed from you, and you are in debt to a mafia guy who will kill you if I do not return the money, then the nature of the promises completely changes and thus the nature of the sin changes with it.
I hope this makes sense.

This may be hard to be brief, but a promise in the Bible is like a Vow, and my bible says it is better to not make the Vow than to make it and then break it. It's a voluntary pledge to fulfill one's agreement.
When we were growing up a hand shake was the Vow or Promise and a man stood on that hand shake, not even a legal paper was needed and if there were any to ever break that hand shake or promise he was then taken to court or before the elders of the church and dealt with. I think if we make a promise to someone and we don't fulfill that promise with no explanation of good reason then we have lied to our brother or sister and lying is a sin. If we have good reason and are unable to fulfill that promise in any way then our Brother or Sister should be able to forgive us with the Love of God as God would forgive us. That is the only way I can reason it my friend.

Think TWICE before you make a promise.
2.Sin; It is like beating an innocent child.
3.If it cannot be fulfilled there must be genuine reasons
4.Willingly cancelling the promise is not a virtue.

Keeping promises or your word is a very important element to trust and other things like credit.
If you make a promise to someone and can not keep it, you need to talk to them and explain why and potentially renegotiate the arrangement.

firstly u should always think b4 speaking........secondly you're commtting a sin if you're swearing by someone ....you r not god.........so even if u falsely swear by someone, u cannot do anything in it......u cannot make a strand of hair white neither can u grant a person death.....& if you're promising someone then u should realise that ,that particular person is dependent on you 4 something, isn't it?......it's not exactly a sin.....but it also depends on the magnitude of your promise......if you r so worried, then try not to break the promises that u gave to someone...........or else don't promise if you're unsure of realising it..............

The reason why it is called as a "Breaking news" is because originally a news that was deemed important was played by stopping a program (on radio or TV) Since the news was used to "stop" or "break" an exisiting program it was called Breaking news
