I have free vision insurance with a $10 copay. Is it a good idea to get checked although my vision is excellent?

Yeah, you should get checked to make sure all really is well and that there doesn't appear to be any issues in the development stage.

Yes!!!! Just because your vision is good (and you cannot even rely solely on your grasp of how "good" your vision is, as there are many people that don't even realize that they need glasses until they try to read the eye chart and the Optometrist puts the lenses in the pheropter) doesn't mean that you shouldn't go and have your eyes checked at least every 2 years or so. Do you wait until your car runs out of oil to get it changed? Do you wait until your tire blows before you try to put air in it? I suspect not.

There are many eye diseases that don't affect your vision and if you have a family history of glaucoma, diabetes, macular degeneration, or any other eye diseases you should definitely have your vision checked. The eye doctor does not get paid to simply refract patients; he also is there to give your eyes their "physical" to make sure they are healthy and to catch anything suspicious. As with any disease, early detection and treatment is always the best thing. Many eye diseases, such as glaucoma, if left untreated will cause permanent damage and vision loss.

Isn't it worth it to pay the $10 copay and go have an exam done? An oil change costs more than that...

Always a good idea. Going to the eye doctor is not JUST about corrective vision; it's also about checking to make sure they are healthy and free of disease and disorders, and most of those occur without you knowing about it.

Yes, it's a good idea to have an annual eye exam, regardless to how good your vision is. I work at lenscrafters, and a 20 year old guy come in, had great vision, and after his eye health examination, we come to the conclusion that he had a cataract forming in his right eye. we refered him to an ophthalmologist, and in a year he Will go in to have it removed!
There's some pretty sweet technology out now as well such as optomapping(retinal photography) and GDx(glaucoma diagnostics that measure and evaluates the nerve fiber layers in the optic nerve), go get yours today!

The eye doctor could also spot things like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and other subtle problems. Also maybe your vision is not as good as you think it is. One eye could be very poor and the other could be straining to compensate for that.

For ten bucks it is worth the peace of mind

Have your eyes checked regularly at least every two years. You are very lucky that you have insurance! Eye exams today cost too much! TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR INSURANCE! You pay for it!
