2 hours after I had given her some shredded roasted chixn and rice. Could she have eaten too much? I gave her just about 1/3 cup of the table food. She was OK and played for awhile after. BUT, everytime when the play got hard, she would start to cough and gag and sometimes have to up-chuck but doesn't quite get out of her mouth. Every other hour I can see/hear her coughing and gagging. Sounds serious so I am contemplating taking her to the vet soon. Any words of advice besides do not feed her table food.

Seems as though there were some food particles that got stuck in Lilie's thoat. Apparently by the next day she was able to clear whatever was bothering her and causing her coughing and gagging. Thanks for all your reponses. I ruled out Kennel Cough only because she was fully immunized against it and could not have contracted KC as she does not have any contact with other dogs. Thanks again for responding to my Ask.!

Some animals eat too fast.
Some animals don't chew before swallowing.
Both methods can have food stuck in throat and/or promote throwing up. Dry food is good to reduce tartar buildup on teeth but does not do any good if they are in such a hurry that they swallow without much or any chewing.

* Dry food in small sizes AND * small portions. If being hand fed, they think they will have more & more if hurry. Dry food with stem-like appearances for these greedy ones need to be either * avoided or * moistened.

That sounds a lot like kennel cough, nothing about the chixn, although you should be wary of feeding your dog anything with spices on it. Plain chix and rice is okay.

In any case, a visit to the vet is in order. Kennel cough can get pretty serious, but the vet can clear it up pretty quickly.

It does sound like Kennel Cough (Bronchitis), but if it started right after you fed her chicken, she could have a piece stuck in her throat or air passage. I would take her to the vet, because either way the vet will need to treat her!! My dog had Kennel Cough and my vet prescribed Temaril P, it has a little bit of steroid, a little bit of cough suppressant, and antibiotic in one small pill! I hope she gets better soon!!!!

When in doubt take your dog to the vet.. whats a few $ worth your pets life? I should know, I have already spent 3k+ on my new puppy on vet bills but he is worth every penny. My vet also told me if I want to give him any human food that PLAIN cooked chicken is ok just make sure there are no spices etc on it. I know rice is in a lot of good dog food but I would hold off on it myself. Now go to the vet and get him looked at should only be $30-50 for a visit.

Whats you are explaining sounds alot like the symptoms of "kennel cough" Kennel cough is a bronchitis characterized by a harsh, hacking cough which most people describe as sounding like “something stuck in my dog’s throat.”Take her to the vet immediatly because it is contagouse to other dog and can get pretty sever.
