My daughter spent the night with a friend over the weekend and said their home was so "cozy". I've often thought that something warm and cozy was missing from our house.

As a start...grab some magazines that focus on cozy decor...Southern Living, Cottage Living, Martha Stewart, Real Simple, etc. Go through these at your local bookstore for inspiration.

You might wish to paint accent walls of paint that are warm, earth-tone colors...brown, rust, mustard yellow, eggplant, etc.

Do you have framed, family photos on display? This too will give the feeling of coziness, as will inexpensive artwork of landscape/nature.

The addition of decorative bowls of potpourri and candles helps, as does color accented pillows, window treatments, throw blankets and area rugs under furniture arrangements in each room...dining room, kitchen "eat-in/breakfast" area, living room/family room, etc.

Use low wattage light bulbs to create warmth. Also, small, decorative lamps give personality and create coziness too...as do books used as acccent pieces in your decor.

Again, focus on warm, earth-tone colors when selecting previously noted items.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

coziness is related to spaces where privacy gains supremacy over openness. You cannot make the whole house cozy. If made it becomes a dungeon. But few space at home like a bedroom, a reading room, bathtub can be places of utmost individual privacy. Privacy is achieved by making the place in such a way that it has less number of windows yet there is a provision for air to flow like a air cooler. It must have soft and dark colors like dark blue, marroon, and soft lights (creame color). The beds if kept must have a lot of pillows and the mattress must be really soft. Can adopt same feng-shui ways like introducing wind chimes, crystals....there a lot of ways to make a place cosy

I make my home cosier for the winter. Here's what I do.

Hang heavier drapes so that they can close and keep the weather out.
Buy some red cushions and maybe a red rug.
Lighting is very important - keep it low.
A real fire is good or a fake one or candles.
Have it nice and warm too so maybel turn up the central heating a few degrees.
Buy your daughter cosy pyjamas and dressing gown and slippers and she'll soon feel cosy.
Always have something cooking in the kitchen, like soup or muffins or apple pie - something which smells nice.

To me, cozy reminds me of grandmas. Good smells, overstuffed, great blankets, nice lamps, and the best ingredient is love.

Throw rugs are awesome. Most homes are tiled or have wood floors these days.Kids tend to be drawn to smaller spaces, you could try arranging furniture to "section off" a large room, giving that small area feel.

Things I connect with cozy:
fireplace
candles [ unscented, at my house ]
family photos
flowers
comfy pillows
afghans/quilts for TV room
pastel, subdued, or jewel tones [ not crayon brights ]
rugs
'restful' art work [ non-controversial, no crayon colors ]
cleanliness, organization
cooking
music
