It adds moisture to the air.

If your baby is in normal health and not ill right now, there is likely not a need to have a humidifier.

However, if she has congestion in her nose and/or throat, or if she has a case of the croup, or if you notice that her nasal and mouth passages seem dry (especially on waking) then a humidifier would be a good thing to use.

You can also choose a vaporizer which heats the air being humidified.

Over the counter medication (similar to Vicks Vapo Rub) can be added to the water in the vaporizer, so that she not only gets moisture but also aromatherapy to help clear the congestion.

A humidifier is a household appliance that increases humidity (moisture) in a single room or in the entire home. There are point of use humidifiers, which are commonly used to humidify a single room, and whole house or furnace humidifiers, which connect to a home's HVAC system to provide humidity to the entire house.

Humidification is often necessary in colder climates where continuous heating will make the air drier, resulting in uncomfortable air quality and increased static electricity.

The use of a humidifier can allow the reproduction of dust mites or the growth of harmful mold, which can be especially harmful for children and the elderly. The relative humidity should not normally be increased above 55%.

Some humidifiers now use Microban technology that prevents mold and bacteria growth within the humidifier.

Refer to the EPA's page on humidifiers for detailed information of the risks as well as recommended maintenance procedures.

a humidifier puts cold or room temp water moisture into the air. a vaporizer heats the water and puts steam into the air.
I always preferred a vaporizer to be sure any bacteria in the water was destroyed before it went into the air we were breathing.

You put water in it and it steams the water. If you have dry air it will help baby to not have dry nasal passages.
