Is everyone aware that oral contraceptives don't protect against STDs? A lot of you seem extremely confused here.

I'm sure most of you do, but the "someone has to protect them against STDs" responses to the Maine BC debate are killing me.

Very aware. Condoms are not 100% protection against some of them either.

Superatheist....is that really how you feel about yourself and your children(if you have any)? How sad!

Well, the purpose of an oral contraceptive is not to stop an STD. It does what it is designed for. To prevent a birth. However, a condom help reduce the chances of pregnancy and STD. To get the kids to understand this, serious sex education classes would be necessary. I am not talking about the abstinence only classes.

Wow: did I miss a discussion in here pertaining to this? Seems like a bizarre forum for this subject, doesn't it?!

The only thing oral contraceptives protect from is pregnancy; and their effectiveness LARGELY depends on precisely-timed dosing every day...even being off by a few hours on one day can sometimes greatly reduce that "98% success" rate...I was taking oral b.c. when I became preg with my 1st child! Be aware, don't be naive!

Peace.

when someone says "contraceptives" that would include condoms. specify "oral contraceptives" and that will fix the problem.

stop being nit-picky. people are not as dumb as you would like to believe, they just may want to throw up another opinion,or go another way on an answer.i get so tired of these questions where a holier than thou person just wants to vent - get over it.

have a great day =)

I am sorry to disappoint you but the best form of contraceptive and protection against STD is abstinence from sex outside marriage and fidelity in marriage.

I personally don't have an opinion yet. On the one hand, I think the parents should be involved in such things, but on the other hand they apparantly have such a huge problem with middle school pregnancy that it seems the parents aren't really doing as well as they should.

I am aware, and I think it is ridiculous that people would say to not allow access to STD preventing devices.
