Do you think that religions should be more lenient towards child molesting?
Do you think that religions should be more lenient towards murdering?
Do you thing that religions should be more lenient towards kidnappings?
(Note that i did not say pedophiles, murderers, or kidnappers)

The two purposes of religion, or at least the Christian religion, are to build the proper relationships between God and man, and between man and man. If the Christian religion does not take a strong stand against sin, then it allows wrong relationships, sin and abuse to continue between "man to man". So the church can never take a lenient stand towards abortion or any other sin.

But at the same time, the church holds the promise of forgiveness and a second chance for those who have committed such acts. It offers a way to get right with God which brings not only a forgiveness for the past actions, but a cleanse of unrighteousness that frees us from future sin. Once cleanse, and the relationship is made right with God, then he can work with you to restore the right relationsips with "man".

So the Christian is not lenient on sin, but it has the answers for the sinner.

I personally believe that as Christians we are supposed to discern evil and condemn the act of abortion. Abortion is murder as it kills a new life gifted by God Himself. But we must also have compassion and not hate the sinner as we all fall short of His glory. While I have been a vocal pro-lifer before I realize more now that I am not to judge women who have had an abortion. By God's grace He will help me to do away with any judging and forgive me if I have. God forgives when someone repents of immorality - a Biblical example could be Mary Magdalene - and serial murderers can be saved if they repent and follow Jesus. Jesus talked to many murderers and criminals. We should try and follow the ways of Jesus, who said 'I judge no one' and who told followers to ‘Go and sin no more’. God is merciful and his judgement is just, whether on judgment day, or with punishment in this life. It is for God alone to judge, otherwise we will be judged by the same measurement. An angry thought, past or future decisions, or an intention, could be considered the same as murder. Can we see into a persons' heart like God can? Yet while we must be humble, and not judge another who may have fallen into a particular pit of sin that we didn’t, Christians cannot be neutral on a subject like abortion. Perhaps blood might be on our hands if we do not warn others as God might convict us to. If you don't stand for something you’ll fall for anything, I say. I believe that a Christian can be called to defend the rights of the innocent unborn as these children are indeed significant to the Lord. http://www.bibleweb.com/2006/11/jesus-wo...

I am not religious, and yes i think that the idea that the soul is created at conception is no longer valid, i think that our conciousness is developed when our neurons start firing, i see no problem with abortions of a fetus that has no brain activity, im not sure when that point is but scientists have gotten this down to around the second trimaster i think, we need to be able to have abortions up antil this point because no matter what anybody says, most humans are not responsible when it comes to reproduction and being forced to raise children in less than savory conditions just creates problems.

There are not enough good homes for every child born, we are reproducing to much as a species and not everyone is taking the responsibility to raise the children to function in society well, this is what i call "society cancer" it spreads like wildfire and can been demonstrated by observing, the drugs and violence, the fact that so many people need imprisoned, the fact that so many people are abusing government programs to live without carrying their weight.

I believe life begins at conception and that the time of death is up to God to decide. I totally hate abortion, it leaves one dead and one wounded. My beliefs as a Christian are that abortion for contraception is murder. However, that never gives me the right to hate any couple who has aborted their child. The Bible says to hate sinful actions, but to love people who sin. Most women I know who've had abortions have felt grief and guilt afterwards that made it hard to truly get over it after an abortion, I lost 3 babies to miscarriages and I know that hurt me very much. I bet the women who have abortions feel sad and hurt too!

I want to love people into the kingdom of God, not hate them or criticise them harshly. It was love that opened me up to Jesus Christ when the hatred all around me drove me to suicide. Love without truth is sentimentality. Truth without love is brutality.

This is a very difficult issue, and within Wicca the opinions run the range from strongly pro-life to strongly pro-choice.

I personally believe that abortion should be a matter for the conscience of the individual. I believe that using abortion as birth control is not acceptable (as a previous poster also stated), and that abortion rates could be reduced if people were educated from a reasonably young age about various forms of birth control and how to be a sexually responsible person.

I also believe that if a woman becomes pregnant and does not want the baby, she should be informed of ALL options, including abortion, adoption, or options that might allow her to keep the child if she wants to. If after that she chooses abortion, and it is within the first trimester, she should be allowed to have the procedure.

I don't think religion should have any influence in our government policy about abortion.

This is a secular government established by a group of men influenced by philosophy about the Enlightenment. Pro-life is often a masquerade for pro-birth or favoring the embryo over the female who must carry it. Some conservatives also believe that contraception will encourage sexual promiscuity. These are not good positions in a government.

And religion is interfering with reason: The new governor of Louisiana had a single, prominent position that won over voters more than pragmatic views on the budget or administration: No abortion for any woman for any reason. If a woman could die from an unsafe pregnancy, these political hacks consider it fine to impose their ideology on her medical treatment.

The Religious Right have already crippled the Constitution's original message of freedom and impartiality toward religion by enforcing their own faith in politics.

Agnostic. I believe abortions should be used in cases where there is a genetic defect in the child that will significantly reduce its quality of life. I also believe that abortions should be allowed in cases of rape. The reason for the latter belief is that I believe that at least a part of violent tendencies is a genetic predisposition; as such, I don't believe that a fertilized fetus that is a result of rape should be allowed to full term.

I do NOT believe abortions should be used *just because* some coupled decided to have sex and got pregnant. That's what we have adoptions for.

Oh, and I am a supporter of stem cell research. It'd be too much to go into how that relates to the above statements.

The religious group I associate myself with has nothing to do with my stance on abortion. My stance is based upon a knowledge of who God is and how He feels about it. At the same time, I don't dictate my beliefs upon others.

I believe that abortion is premeditated murder because I also believe that life begins at conception. Too often, abortion is an excuse for a promiscuous lifestyle. I empathize with victims of rape, etc. However, a faith and a trust in God can bring you through anything. I don't think, though, that there is any moral obligation, for example, to rear a child yourself which was born as a result of rape -- though it is not the child's fault as to whom its father was. But, there are certainly other couples out there whom are willing to adopt and can't have children of their own.
