Even today science has not been able to give exact the answer for your question. I willl try to give answer referring some yogis who have done some studies on it.
When we go to sleep, unconsciously performs the yogic rite of releasing himself from bodily identification and of merging the life force with healing currents in the main brain region and in the six subdynamos of his spinal centers. Unknowingly, the sleeper is thus recharged by the cosmic energy that sustains all life. the flow of life energy is towards the outward world; the currents are wasted and abused in the senses.

The better question is "HOW" do people sleep? That's what I ask myself when I roll around at night.

I heard it's to record your memory for that day. Your brain can only hold so much activity, so you have to go to sleep so you can like start over or something. It sounded better when it was told to me, but it's something like that.
