I am planning to dye my hair red but I just want to check a few things first. I would be dying it for the first time and I'm 16 years old. My hair color is a light brown and I want to dye it a little bit lighter than maroon. Will my hair be really damaged? Is there anything I can do to prevent damage? How can I keep it healthy after I dye it? Please let me know everything I should know before I go do it. Thanks.

I have no experience with hair dying...OF COURSE I'm not going to do it myself...I'm definitely getting it done at a salon

It shouldn't be damaged if you follow the directions or have it professionally applied. Especially on virgin hair. Be sure to condition regularly to keep it healthy.

Your hair will not be damaged from one coloring. Buy a good conditioner and keep the ends of your hair trimmed, whether you dye your hair or not. Keep in mind that you may not get the results you want on the first try. Dye comes out very colorful and then fades as you wash it. Choose your color carefully and have some fun. RTW in case you didn't know this, red fades the fastest of all hair colorings.

I really hope you're not doing this yourself because you have no idea what you're doing. Go to a salon. To answer your question, coloring your hair isn't very harmful at all, it's lightening (bleaching) it that does the most damage. Let a professional do it because there are too many things that can go wrong with so called "kitchen color" and you wouldn't even know it was going wrong. People pay a lot of money to go to school to learn about hair, it only makes sense to let them do the job. Would you go to a doctor for surgery or do it yourself?

first of all spend the money and have a hair salon do it. I would not worry about your hair drying out- Just make sure you use a good moisturizer hair shampoo and conditioner.(for color treated hair) .. Have fun with it.. My daughter is 10 and has dark brown hair and i let her get it highlighted. Her hair is not dry and very healthy. Swimming will dry out hair but thats with any hair..
Go for it-- So many products out there (in the store) that will keep your hair very healthy..

Yes your hair will die. Do you not check out the other people that have that type of dye in their hair. It is brittle and will crack. There may be some great products out there that claim to repair your hair but there is nothing like growing a new crop of hair.

I am 17 and I have coloured my hair about ten times and my hair is not damaged at all. after you dye it use shampoo for color treated hair and you will be fine. never dye your hair twice in one day and make sure you have someone do it who knows what they are doing. good luck.

No, it won't be damaged after the first time. After dying your hair, you should buy shampoo/conditioner that says its specified for colored hair, and that should help keep the color stay in longer.
