1) First person to call shotgun when they are in clear veiw of the vehicle gets it.
2) There are two exceptions: (a) Anyone with a disability gets it, or (b) when someone is already touching the door or is already sitting in the shotgun position, and someone else calls it the person already there gets it.
3) And as general rules, the driver gets to disolve any disputes, and any gf/bf gets the coveted spot, as long as it does not interfere with the above exceptions.
EDIT: Yeah...i kinda like that rule above my post, where the vehicle owner always gets it when not driving.

You have some great answers already. You must call shotgun before anyone else, yield to the person's significant shotgun rider and especially yield if the person has an actual gun! In that case I would rather take a bus!

You have to be able to see the car. The first person to say shotgun gets it. If there's a tie, then the driver gets to choose how it's settled. There's no reserving shotgun (i.e. saying "I get shotgun on the way back). Generally the most inebriated person gets shotgun (try shoving a drunk person in the back seat). And if the person who owns the car ISN'T driving, they automatically get shotgun.

You can't have shotgun twice in a row. But other than that - first one to call it within ear shot of the driver gets it.

The first person to call shotgun wins, period. If there's a tie, they play Rock, Paper, Scissors to settle the score.
That's basically it for me, LOL!

The car must be in everyone's line of sight.
If you call it too early, your risk a protest. Not worth the risk.
