It seems too loud to be the 'sound of nothing' because one of the times I had a friend over and as I was talking to him I could hear it and it was about as loud as he was talking.

Leaving the TV on helps, but I still hear it (and it watses alot of electricity because the off timer doesnt work)

The problem with it is that it makes it harder for me to go to sleep and can become very annoying.

You are probably experiencing "tinnitus" or "ringing in the ears" which is very common. For more info on this phenomenon type "tinnitus" into Yahoo! web search and a number of links comes up. Wikipedia has a good summary as well as the American Tinnitus Association where you may be able to find forums for people troubled by it.

Good luck in your search, good mental health, peace and Love!

I find when I'm trying to go to sleep in quiet i often hear things that aren't exactly "nothing" Mine in particular although this may seem crazy is the super mario brothers music playing over and over again with mario jumping and hitting alot of blocks. I've asked my boyfriend in the same room with me if he hears it as well. Of course he laughs.
I find the tv to be too stimulating for my brain i end up watching it instead of falling asleep. Or sometimes my dreams are affected by the background noise of the tv. which is something i don't find pleasant.
So what i do is do somethign in my head to distract me my mind from that pressing noise. Often something repetitive such as counting. Go figure counting sheep actually works.. LOL but it does if I concentrate on actually counting clearly from number to number, not allowing my mind to get distracted and carry off to another thought. eventually i will drift off to sleep. THis also works well with a prayer, saying, or slogan that you can repeat over and over again. FOr me it's the serenity prayer.
HOpe this helps...
