Uh oh, someone pushed my cell phone button again...
Yes cell phones, like many many other sources of distractions, can be a contributing factor in auto accidents.
So should we ban cell phone use while driving? I say no.
What? Didn't I just admit that they can be a distraction?
Well, so can CB and Dispatch Radios, OnStar, A GPS unit, adjusting auto controls, getting something in the glove compartment, messing with a laptop computer, glacing at directions, and even other passengers. So should we ban all of that too?
I think it's a mistake to begin to legislate common sense. Especially when government and common sense are practically oxymorons. Who determines what is okay and what isn't. Example? Headphones are illegal, but a bluetooth wireless device is okay. Huh?! Does that make any sense?
Truth is, some poeple can't walk and chew gum at the same time, should we punish people who can use a CB Radio or Cell Phone just fine while rolling down the road because someone else couldn't handle it? Distractions have always been present while driving. Distractions will always be present while driving. Many distractions occur from sources outside the vehicle. If a person is weaving in and out of their lane, can't signal when turning or changing lanes, or is otherwise driving like a doofus, they sould be pulled over and cited. Cell phone or not.
Enforce the laws on the books! We don't need to pass a slew of new meaningless ones.
Let the thumbs downs begin...

ANYTHING that will take your full attention away from driving your car can contribute to car accidents. For example: lighting up and smoking a cigarette, eating, drinking a soda or coffee, refereeing the fight between your kids in the back seat. The argument about cell phones is that some people feel that it isn't any more distracting than listening to the radio or sitting there and talking with a passenger. I have used my cell phone while driving and my opinion is that it's like COMBINING any two of the things I just listed. And that's why I don't talk on the phone and drive at the same time anymore.

Several studies show cell phones are a leading cause of car crashes. It is estimated that cell phone distracted drivers are four times more likely to be in a car wreck. According to a Harvard University study, cell phones cause over 200 deaths and half a million injuries each year.

Yes. Driving requires all of your attention. While using a cell phone, you are thinking of other things.

I don't know the statistics, but I would have to say they are a big factor in reckless driving and probably a contributing factor in a large number of accidents whether people will admit it or not.

i've got no longer heard of too many human beings being killed by using cel telephone. I even have heard of (and in my view experienced) many human beings being killed by using decrease than the impact of alcohol drivers. mutually as i'm no longer a supporter of cel telephone use, truly textual content messaging, mutually as driving, this is obvious to me that decrease than the impact of alcohol driving is mostly a foul factor and speaking on the cel telephone relies upon on the driving force's skill to pay interest and communicate on an analogous time. i'm specific that any learn might tutor that extra injuries are brought about (and lives taken) by using decrease than the impact of alcohol drivers extremely than cel telephone talkers, yet the two must be prevented. now and back it must be needed to respond to a decision mutually as driving (out of your babies, working example). there is under no circumstances any excuse for decrease than the impact of alcohol driving. hear to mom.
