From a professional point iof view you need phots taken by an accomplished photographer. It will help if he/she is in that field. Contacting a few agencies to see how they work will give you insight to how the industry works. If they think they can find you work they will help you get a begiining portfolio.

But the main part of your question delt with taxes, And yes it is possible to write off equipment in a income generating activity. It cannot be just a simple hobby. Revenue must result and net income must occur in a year out of 3.
If your plan is to write off expenses in a non income genrerating activity to shelter income in another it will not fly if they audit.

first of all any home pictures will not be excepted by anyone, if you are a model you need to be represented by a legit agency, and have a professional portfolio done, if you would like to get free GOOD pics done go to modelmayhem.com and look to collaborate with a good photographer for tfp.
