I don't mean for medical reasons (although some might need to do that) but as a matter of course.
I can still picture the marks I made on the kitchen door when I measured my boys heights and it was fun and I wish that I had kept the marks because I do the same for my grandsons and it would be interesting to compare their heights with their Father/uncles at the same age (mind you I smacked for drawing on the walls so it would have been hypocritcal of me to leave the marks!).
As for other measurements - like most I was forever making those over clothing needs and weighing was another fun (and competetive!) routine at bathtime for the four of them although I never noted the results.
What got me thinking was this -

It really does seem odd to me to leave that to the schools (although as I say I don't object to school medicals at all).

Ha ha - I must admit that they never got me onto the bathroom scales - that was strictly a private affair between me and my conscience!

We measure their height, regularly, and keep the progressive marks on the inside door of a closet. Weight is done only occasionally, when one of them finds the bathroom scale & wants to experiment. We keep the scale out of sight for the most part, though, wanting to make sure that the kids realize that *health* is more important than *weight*.

Both height & weight are measured regularly by their doctors at their annual checkups.

I have no problem with the schools doing it, too, though. Just because *I* take the time to keep track of my children's growth & health doesn't mean that every parent is doing that, too. I don't mind having the school keep an eye out for kids who might otherwise be neglected, or even taking the time to point something out to me about my child that I might have missed.

My daughter is 7 months old and when she gets older, I do plan on marking her height on the door, just like my mom did with my brother and I.
Since the month she was born, i jot down her typical routine for a random day...it is fun looking back and seeing how far she progessed already.
I think you had a good idea, I'm going to measure my daughter next to my mark on my old bedroom door :)

Oh yeah we do about every 3mos or so, we stand them against the door jam in our hall way and measure how tall they have gotten, we mark it with the mesurement and the date, so it will always be there, by the way my kids are 8 and 5 and still my little babies

We have a doorway in our house where we mark our 2 boys' height every January 1st. It's amazing to see how much they have grown each year. They also like to compare their height to their brother's.

I remeber measuring my daughters when they were growing up but I don't recall weighing them. I may have weighed myself with and without holding the baby but that was probably about it. I guess I finally figured out I was also finding out my own weight too with this system LOL. Take care.

I think every parent measures their child just for the purposes to keep track of how fast they grow, its fun to look back on it and see what size they were when they were a certain age.

its best not to weigh your kids as it can make them feel self conscious about their body image and then cause them to have an eating disorder before they even reach the age of 8
