Not certain, but perhaps:
* People who were going to get lung cancer from doing dangerous jobs without the right protection had mostly gotten the cancer by then (e.g. people who worked in mines and stuff?)
* More awareness of the disease.
* More awareness of the dangers of smoking - it began to be viewed as something unhealthy rather than something 'cool'.
* Treatment improved.
I'm probably wrong but I am trying =D

I would bet it has a lot to do with more lung cancer awareness and a generation that has grown up knowing that smoking can cause lung cancer. Also, there has been a lot done since the 70's and 80's to reduce the numbers of smokers and especially underage smokers. I will bet that would cause a reduction of cases of lung cancer as time goes on.

Probably for several reasons. Decrease in the rates of smoking in the population over the last 50 years having an impact now. Also, many people who used to be miners, and others exposed to asbestos, will have already passed away, so there will be less mesothelioma's. I presume you mean the incidence rate, if you mean the survival rate, then faster diagnosis and better treatments have played a key role.

Truth? The truth is that the majority of people who smoked twenty years ago were members of the Baby Boomer generation, which by far out-populated any generation that has immediately followed it, though the current generation is catching up. Members of that generation have either grown old and passed on or left us because of some other way.
Moreover, the people around today are satisfied to walk around and pat themselves on the back for not smoking, yet the toss in toxins that are just as bad for your body. Whereas in the past it was "cool" to smoke, now it is "cool" not to smoke. However, it seems to have become cool to smoke pot, do crack, smack, dope, eat unhealthy, not exercise. We have just traded in one severe health risk for others. Pick your poison.

better education and awareness. most people will say its because smoking has decreased, but it has a lot to do with the decrease of heavy industry and cleaner air. two of my great uncles died from lung cancer and never smoked a day. but one worked in a mine and the other worked in a dye factory.

It could correlate to the decrease in people smoking.
Less smoking = less lung disease.
As a former smoker (30 years) I can attest to the benefits of quitting.

Well they banned cigarette advertising on TV and cinemas and on billboards etc...and also the prices began to increase over and above inflation....so I am sure that has something to do with it.
